About the role

Join our Commercial Solutions team as a Collections Agent. In this role, you will administer a portfolio of judgment and non-judgment debt owed to CMHC by assessing and processing the settlement of insurance claims resulting from mortgage and non-mortgage defaults related to government programs, while minimizing risk to achieve maximum collection on a case-by-case basis and a minimum of client complaints.

This is a temporary position lasting 12 months.

What you’ll do :

  • Examine financial information, seeking historical and contextual data from various sources to establish the deficiency balance.
  • Review bankruptcy proposals to protect CMHC's rights to obtain the highest possible dividends and determine acceptance or opposition.
  • Analyze legal actions and judgment renewals when settlements are not reached.
  • Recommend legal remedies to supervisors and solicitors, including placing execution orders, conducting debt examinations, garnishments, foreclosures, power of sale, and bankruptcies.
  • Provide documentation for review and approval to manage risk, especially on policy or procedural exceptions outside financial authority.
  • Locate consumers using resources such as credit bureaus, underwriting systems, social media, and online platforms.
  • Negotiate settlements directly with clients within delegated authority, referring complex claims to senior team members.
  • Guide third-party collection agencies, service providers, lenders, and internal departments on legal actions, settlements, and CMHC's position explanations.

What you should have :

  • Post-secondary education in business, accounting, finance, legal, or commerce.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in customer service or collections.
  • Understanding of the mortgage industry and mortgage insurance business.
  • Knowledge of the National Housing Act, Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, Creditors Relief Act, and provincial collection laws.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to exercise empathy, diplomacy, and tact, especially with distressed debtors.
  • Excellent organizational skills for multi-tasking, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with sound judgment and escalation ability.

It would be great if you also had :

  • Experience with accounts involving misrepresentation or fraud.
  • Knowledge of mortgage laws, collections, default remedies, or property administration.
