Job summary

Aboriginal Head Start Association of BC in Nanaimo invites applications for an Early Childhood Educator dedicated to equitable, Indigenous-centered care for 3–5 year olds. Job Description

We are looking for an Early Childhood Educator to join our team and contribute to equitable and inclusive care for all children.

The Aboriginal Head Start Early Childhood Educator demonstrates exceptional standards of practice and professional competency within the field of Early Childhood Education. Successful candidates will be experienced in planning and implementing high-quality early learning environments that support the development, well-being, and learning of young children.

The AHS Child Care Program is committed to providing a rich early learning experience rooted in Indigenous culture, language, and identity-guided by the AHS Program Components. Love, care and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do.

Individuals interested in this role should be skilled in creating and facilitating child-led, inquiry-based programming that encourages exploration, creativity, and meaningful learning experiences. The successful candidate will collaborate to ensure a shared vision and collective approach to creating an early learning environment that fosters wonder, curiosity, and excitement for all children.

This heart-centered work requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to build meaningful, respectful, and trusting relationships with children, families, colleagues, and community members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate daily in childcare program as part of the educator team, modelling a sensitive approach to inclusion for all children.
  • Plan alongside families ensuring family values and goals are guiding support strategies for children with diverse needs.
  • Coordinate and lead care planning and integrative case management meetings.
  • Work as part of the Munu educator team to ensure support strategies are planned and implemented successfully.
  • Co-create and deliver daily programming guided by AHS Principles and the BC Early Learning Framework
  • Hold a child-led, inquiry-based, land-centered approach
  • Build warm, reciprocal relationships with children, families, Elders, and peers
  • Support children’s diverse developmental needs, including observation and care planning
  • Participate in monthly team planning and professional development closures
  • Support Indigenous approaches to wellness, education, and intergenerational learning
  • Reflect and integrate the six AHS components: culture/language, family involvement, social support, education, health promotion, and nutrition

What We’re Looking For
  • ECE -SN Certification is preferrable (recognized by the BC ECE Registry)
  • Valid First Aid
  • Passion for equitable and inclusive care.
  • Receptivity to Aboriginal Head Start’s six components and philosophy
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Interest in working with families, Elders, and diverse Indigenous communities
  • Bonus: experience with ECERS-3, ITERS-3, or similar evaluation tools

  • $27 hr base wage + $6/hr ECE wage enhancement (total: $33/hr)
