Job Description

Key Accountabilities:

Child Development and Care:

  • Support the RECE and other ECA staff in facilitating the development and behavior of children.
  • Support implementation and evaluation of age-appropriate programs.
  • Use observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitate cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development, embracing diversity.
  • Support holistic development of children.
  • Build meaningful relationships with children.
  • Identify and expand learning opportunities (teachable moments).
  • Support individual learning and development needs.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Meet health, welfare, and safety needs, implementing preventative measures.
  • Follow safe off-site practices and procedures, including toileting, diapering, and providing first aid/CPR.
  • Protect children from harm, implement emergency plans, and report suspected abuse or neglect.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles, nutritional needs, and model proper manners.
  • Establish positive behavior guidance and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Use active listening skills and adhere to health and safety regulations.

Equipment & Facilities:

  • Develop and maintain a safe environment, check for hazards, and ensure cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and facilities.

Family and Community Relations:

  • Build relationships with families, orient them to the program, and provide resources.
  • Raise awareness of community events and advocate for families.
  • Collaborate with parents to support child development.

Record Keeping:

  • Complete daily logs and participate in meetings and activities.

Relationships:

  • Internal: Staff, volunteers, children.
  • External: Parents, guardians, regulatory agencies, public health, Ministry of Education.

Managerial & Financial Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Childcare Center Supervisor; no direct reports.
  • Manage minor material assets; no financial transactions.

Working Conditions:

  • Lift/move equipment and children, set up rooms, and maintain safety standards.
  • Use tablets or iPads for communication.
  • Potentially intervene in physical confrontations, and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, noise, and potential verbal abuse or tantrums.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years old (Canada Summer Job age: 18-30).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Criminal Reference Check, Medical, First Aid & CPR, and other certifications required.
  • Experience: At least 1 year in related roles.
  • Knowledge of program implementation and evaluation.

  • Ability to create a welcoming, calm environment and communicate kindly and patiently.
  • Self-motivated with ongoing professional development.

Compensation:

The target salary range is $20.25 to $25.31, up to $30.37, based on experience and qualifications.
