Job summary

Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, invites applications for an EAL (Non-Credit) Instructor. Qualifications

Responsibilities

About the Role

Reporting to the Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Program Manager, the EAL Instructor provides high-quality English language instruction to domestic and international adult learners preparing for university studies, other post-secondary programs, and future professional and intercultural contexts.

The instructor designs and delivers engaging, student-centred learning experiences aligned with established curricula, course syllabi, learning outcomes, and program standards. Drawing on expertise in adult language acquisition, the instructor uses appropriate teaching methodologies, educational technologies, and inclusive practices to support students’ academic language development, communication skills, intercultural competence, and readiness for post-secondary education.

The successful candidate will teach in both in-person and technology-mediated environments, assess student learning, provide individualized academic support, and collaborate with colleagues to maintain consistency and quality across the program. The role also contributes to ongoing curriculum, assessment, and program renewal initiatives.

Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Support
  • Design and deliver semester, unit, and lesson plans aligned with course syllabi, curricular outcomes, and the academic demands of post-secondary study.
  • Provide engaging, student-centred instruction that supports language proficiency, academic skills, cultural awareness, and intercultural communicative competence.
  • Integrate appropriate educational technologies and digital learning activities that prepare students to use technology effectively for academic purposes.
  • Use assigned course texts and materials while developing or sourcing copyright-compliant supplementary resources as needed.
  • Adapt instructional approaches, learning activities, and resources in response to students’ diverse linguistic, cultural, educational, and individual needs.
  • Clearly communicate course objectives, academic expectations, student responsibilities, and relevant institutional and program policies.
  • Provide supplemental instructional assistance to students during designated office hours.
  • Foster an inclusive and respectful learning environment reflecting principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and intercultural responsiveness.
Course and Learning Administration
  • Develop, organize, and maintain course content within the Learning Management System, including instructional resources, assignments, assessments, and grades.
  • Set up and manage digital tools and textbook platforms used in course delivery.
  • Contribute to the maintenanceof course syllabi and instructional resources.
  • Engage with campus and community resources to enhance students’ learning experiences.
  • Connect students with appropriate university services in collaboration with program administration.
Assessment and Reporting
  • Develop and administer formative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions.
  • Administer digital and paper-based summative assessments in accordance with program examination protocols and secure delivery practices.
  • Evaluate student achievement against course learning outcomes and determine readiness for advancement to subsequent proficiency levels.
  • Provide timely, constructive, and appropriate feedback to students.
  • Accurately calculate, record, and report grades in accordance with program and institutional requirements.
  • Collaborate with the academic team to review, revise, and develop assessments.
Collaboration and Program Contribution
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support consistent, high-quality program delivery.
  • Participate in discussions about student progress, instructional challenges, and effective teaching and assessment practices.
  • Attend team, academic, and other scheduled meetings as required.
  • Contribute to research-informed teaching practices and ongoing curriculum, assessment, and program renewal.
  • Participate in the development of instructional materials.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and current records of student attendance, achievement, and other required information.
  • Monitor and respond to institutional email and program communications in a timely manner.
  • Maintain digital and physical course documents, reports, and resources across relevant systems.
  • Manage records in accordance with university retention requirements and applicable privacy legislation.
  • Follow institutional and program policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and professional standards.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned, particularly during non-instructional periods or periods with a reduced teaching load.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position, with regular working hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
