Job description

Position Description

Reports to: Minister of Congregational Life and Membership Development for program matters; Director of Finance and Administration for budget matters.

Hours: 40 hours / week, including Sunday mornings.

Purpose: The church exists to glorify God, make disciples of Jesus Christ, and participate with the Holy Spirit in the healing of creation. We seek a vibrant, Spirit-filled Director of Children and Youth Ministries to provide visionary leadership, expand our gospel outreach, foster spiritual growth, and encourage youth participation in worship and new ministry initiatives.

The goal of the Children’s and Youth Ministries at TEMC is to see children and youth grow in their faith and continue into active church participation and leadership. The Director will implement professional, safe, and effective programs for children (nursery through Grade 6) and youth (Grades 7-12), nurturing their spiritual development and relationships with Jesus Christ.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement a church-wide vision for Children’s and Youth Ministries. (15%)
  2. Research, procure, evaluate, and maintain age-appropriate curriculum and resources. (5%)
  3. Teach high school Sunday School and confirmation classes; recruit and train volunteers; oversee nursery care; support teachers. (20%)
  4. Communicate regularly with families via personal contact, phone, social media, email, bulletin boards, and newsletters. (10%)
  5. Collaborate with staff and committees to organize family and intergenerational events, including annual Pancake Supper, family picnic, Christmas pageant, etc. (15%)
  6. Plan youth nights, special events, ecumenical gatherings, and retreats. (10%)
  7. Lead Children’s Time during most Sundays’ 9:15 Contemporary Service. (10%)
  8. Organize and direct summer Vacation Bible School or similar programs. (10%)
  9. Attend to pastoral care needs of children, youth, and families, communicating needs to clergy. (5%)

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a personal spiritual life through prayer, Bible study, and disciplines.
  • Maintain office hours and sabbath; attend weekly staff meetings; perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Personal Qualities:

  • Commitment to building relationships with young families and a solid faith in Christ.
  • Experience working with children/youth, preferably in a church setting.
  • Love for people, good relational skills, and interest in spiritual growth for children and youth.
  • University education in Christian Ministries, Biblical Studies, Education, or related field.
  • Responsible, respectful, professional, confidential, detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work well in a team, exercise good judgment, and pursue spiritual and professional growth.
