POSITION TITLE: Type 2 Wildfire Crew Leader / Forestry Worker

DEPARTMENT: Wildfire Crew / Fuel Management - Emergency Preparedness Program

SUPERVISOR: Emergency Planning Coordinator

TERMS: Full-Term, Term until March 15, 2026 with a chance of extension

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the TteS Type 2 Wildfire Crew deploys and operates in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Type 2 Wildfire Crew Leader is accountable for:

• Leading the Type 2 Wildfire Crew and promoting and fostering an efficient, effective, collaborative, professional, and safety-forward team


• Maintaining crew and job site safety


• Ensuring wildfire crew and crew member readiness


• Ensuring crew member certifications are up to date


• Gathering critical information pertinent to daily assignments


• Directing and supervising crew on and off the fireline


• Participating in BCWS training and coordination calls


• Working alongside and/or taking direction from BCWS crews and personnel


• Participating in fuel management, wildfire mitigation project work, and other department projects (e.g., TteS firewood delivery program and FireSmart initiatives)


• Participating in emergency prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response, and recovery activities

• Participating in wildfire prevention and response community education and awareness events

Type 2 Wildfire Crew Leader deliverables include:

• Ensuring administrative documents including work safety plans, safety reports, training records, project update reports, as well as employee and crew timesheets are up-to-date and completed in a timely manner


• Ensuring quick, efficient, and effective wildfire response in accordance with the BCWS Indigenous Initial Response Crew (IIRC) standards


• Determining safe, efficient, and effective fire suppression methods and techniques to be utilized


• Communicating with internal and external resources on assignments in a timely manner

Maintaining crew safe work policies and professional conduct at all times

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

Certifications:

• BC Class 5 or 7 Driver’s License without restrictions


• WorkSafe recognized Basic First Aid Certificate (formerly OFA Level 1) and Transportation Endorsement


• S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety or equivalent (Annual Re-currency)


• S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance


• ICS 200 Incident Command System 200


• S 211 The Fire Environment for Firefighters / Dispatchers


• S 212 Fire Line Communications or Restricted Radio Operators License


• S 213 Use of Bulldozers and Heavy Equipment


• S 230 Introduction to Supervisions (Crew Boss)


• S 235 Burn Off and Backfiring


• S 241 Fire Assessment


• WHMIS & TDG Certified


• Acceptable Criminal Record Check

Education:

• Highschool Diploma

Experience:

• Acted as a Wildfire Crew Leader on three (3) fires OR has thirty five (35) days as a Wildland Firefighter (minimum of 420 hours required)

Financial Responsibility:

Ensuring wildfire response and project work is completed in a financially responsible manner

Supervision or Training Duties:

• Responsible for supervising a 3 - 4 person Type 2 wildfire crew


• Participate in all operational job required training courses

• Maintain certifications required for this position

Skills and Abilities:

• Physically fit and capable of physical labour


• Capable of navigating rugged terrain in adverse conditions


• Able to carry heavy object (50 lbs) long distances over difficult terrain

Assets, but not required:

• Preference may be given to a qualified TteS Band Member


• Post secondary Forestry or Resource Management education (in progress or completed)


• High level of fitness


• Strong computer skills (e.g., Avenza and MS Office)


• Previous wildland firefighting experience with a government agency


• Forestry work experience (e.g., logging, planting, and silviculture)


• Other resource based work experience (e.g., oil and gas, mining, and farming)


• Extensive outdoor and wilderness experience (e.g., hunting, trapping, fishing, and back country activities)


• Volunteer Fire Department experience


• WorkSafe BC recognized Advanced First Aid Certificate (formerly OFA Level 3)


• WorkSafe BC recognized Power saw Operator Certificate


• WorkSafe BC Danger Tree Assessor Certificate

• BC Forest Safety Council Faller Certificate

Special Requirements:

• Minimum of 19 years of age


• Completed the annual Par Q and You Self Screening Assessment


• Pass the WFX-FIT standard for Type 2 Wildland Fire Fighter (BCWS) Fitness Test


• Ability to travel if necessary


• Ability to work in high stress environments


• Ability to work overtime and be on standby before and/or after regular work shifts

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts - 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE: Starting at $30.53-$33.72/hour depending on education & experience
