Senior Parks Maintenance Worker (Temporary – up to 6 months)

Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

POSITION FUNCTION

Senior Parks Maintenance Workers contribute to the enhancement and upkeep of the City’s public parks and open spaces, utilizing specialised skill in the operation of industrial vehicles and a variety of hand tools and power equipment, to ensure the continued excellence of the City’s public spaces.

KEY DUTIES

Park Maintenance Support

Assist with Park operations by performing assigned tasks in horticulture, arboriculture, turf, and infrastructure such as:

  • Mowing, trimming, weeding, digging, raking, and removing refuse and debris.
  • Preparing, planting, and maintaining flower and shrub beds, landscapes, boulevards, turf, sports fields, and young trees.
  • Constructing and maintaining pathways, hard infrastructure, playgrounds, irrigation, furniture, playground equipment, ponds, and streams.
  • Maintaining cemetery grounds and assisting with interments.
  • Grinding stumps, chipping brush, and with direct supervision, light pruning.
  • Watering of trees, baskets, turf, and various garden landscapes.
  • Maintaining tree wells, tree grates, and tree guards.
  • Flagging and directing traffic around equipment and operations and in public laneways.
  • Collecting data for inventory updates and data collection apps.
  • Recording accurate daily equipment logs, material slips, timesheets, and maintenance records.
  • Providing instructions and information to staff and responding to public and departmental inquiries regarding park maintenance.
  • Conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, performing minor maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment.

Park Equipment Operation

The role involves operating:

  • Various industrial trucks: tanker trucks, aerial lift trucks, trucks with trailers, hook lift trucks, leaf vacuum trucks.
  • Brush chippers, loaders, stump grinders.
  • Industrial tractors with turf/horticultural attachments.
  • Small crane operations for loading/unloading.
  • Commercial ride-on mowers, requiring proficiency in adjustments and loading.
  • Light power equipment: rollers, utility vehicles, concrete mixers, tampers.
  • Small power tools: chainsaws, pole saws, mowers, edgers, blowers, trimmers, sod cutters, grinders, sanders, cut saws.
  • Hand tools related to park maintenance.

Perform related duties as required and qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

  • Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed during progress.
  • Problems are referred to supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort :

  • Lift and move heavy equipment and materials (occasional).

Mental Effort :

  • Short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment (occasional).

Visual / Auditory Effort :

  • Normal.

Work Environment :

  • Exposure to dust, noise, vibration (occasional).
  • Work outside in all weather conditions (continuous).
  • Exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, biohazards with protective measures (occasional).
  • Exposure to traffic (occasional).

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Operate various industrial equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Establish effective working relationships.
  • Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.
  • Work safely on job sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training, Certification :

  • Grade 10
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.

Experience :

  • At least 2 years of related experience in landscape, horticulture, or tree maintenance, including operating industrial equipment, or an equivalent education and experience combination.

OTHER :

  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

Work schedule : Shifts based on operational needs, typically 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, 40-hour week.

Salary: $33.40/hour, Pay Grade 6
