DESCRIPTION :

The Library at UBC’s Okanagan campus invites applications from creative, service-oriented librarians who excel at leading diverse teams and are committed to supporting transformative student learning experiences and research excellence. This is a full-time ongoing position as the Head, Teaching Partnerships and Public Services. Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, Okanagan Campus, this position is responsible for providing intellectual and administrative leadership for their unit, contributing to the development of lasting, innovative, and responsive teaching and public services that position the Library as a vital resource for the campus and its diverse stakeholders, now and into the future.

The Head will be a member of a team responsible for the daily operational management of the UBC Okanagan Library, ensuring that services and policies meet the needs of faculty, students, and staff. The Head, representing their unit, provides input into the strategic and budgetary planning of the Library, and may act as the committee delegate of the Deputy University Librarian, as necessary.

The successful candidate will oversee the Library’s Teaching Partnerships and Public Services, including teams responsible for:

  • Learning and Curriculum Support, which designs, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates information literacy programs and services supporting transformative learning objectives;
  • Public Services, including reference services, outreach, campus collaborations like the Student Learning Hub, makerspace UBCO, the Inclusive Technology Lab, and the UBC Innovation Library in downtown Kelowna.

As a manager-practitioner, the incumbent will also participate in delivering library services such as reference, teaching, faculty liaison, and collection development. The specific areas will be assigned at the discretion of the Deputy University Librarian, in consultation with the Head.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Masters-level degree from an accredited library or information science program or equivalent internationally accredited program, or a master's degree with specialization in archival science.
  • Leadership, management, and supervisory experience in an academic library.
  • Experience teaching information literacy.
  • Experience providing reference and research consultations.
  • Experience working collegially with diverse populations, respecting diverse perspectives, including conflicting ones.
  • Demonstrated commitment to EDIA and reconciliation, with experience integrating these into professional practice.
  • Ability to develop, assess, and refine library services or facilities.
  • Ability to initiate, plan, and execute projects as part of a team.
  • Leadership experience in committees or working groups.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to give and respond to constructive feedback.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Knowledge of public services practices, policies, and procedures in academic libraries.
  • Ability to inspire innovation and motivate teams.
  • Experience developing long-range academic or community programs.
  • Academic or professional background in relevant subject areas.
  • Experience with assessment activities to support continuous improvement of library services.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND SALARY :

This is a full-time, ongoing position with a five-year renewable administrative term. The initial appointment may be probationary, with review and possible confirmation after two years. The salary range is between $10,000 and $12,000 per month, corresponding to $130,000 to $154,000 annually, plus stipends and benefits. Exact salary will depend on experience and qualifications. The appointment is governed by the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association.

The start date will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate.
