HOURS OF WORK: 8 hours daily

WORK TERM: Casual on-call basis

LOCATION: Based at Operations Department and working at various schools throughout the Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education.

RATE OF PAY: $31.02 per hour


MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Department of Labour Licensed Journeyperson and/or Red Seal Certified Plumber
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Certificates in WHIMIS, First Aid/CPR, Fall Arrest and Confined Space

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow written instructions and to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, stretch, stoop, reach, climb, and move heavy objects.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

ROLE: Performs work up to and including journey level trades work in constructing, maintaining and repairing building plumbing systems and components and acts in a leadership role in installation, maintenance, repair and construction projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Builds, repairs, maintains and installs plumbing systems including but not limited to water, wastewater, hydronic and sprinkler systems in accordance with established practices and standards;
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of building or capital improvement projects. Determines material quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs and projects to ensure accurate estimating of costs and schedules;
  • Performs semi-skilled work and labour associated with other trades as required;
  • Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, national provincial and local plumbing codes, other applicable standards and good practice of the trade;
  • Provides emergency response and corrective action for urgent building problems;
  • Maintains appropriate records including recording equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, vehicle records, test reports and other related data;
  • Ensures sufficient material, correct replacement parts and suppliers. Initiates ordering of supplies and replacement parts, including properly stocking vehicle and regularly recording of vehicle inventory;
  • Liaises with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers, and other departments on maintenance and project work;
  • Completes and documents work orders including time and materials and submits to operations department;
  • Provides written reports on any inspections and/or tests and makes recommendations to improve performance;
  • Ensures duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner;
  • Evaluates status of buildings and facilities as assigned and provides written reports;
  • Trains, and evaluates apprentices and other assigned staff; reviews progress and makes changes as needed;
  • Performs duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Board policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS, and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
