Truck Driver - Solid Waste and Recycling (Residential Recycling Collection)

Duration: Regular Full Time

Salary: $37.20/hour (2024 Rates)

Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Thursday from 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM

This position works in the Residential Collection organizational unit. This is skilled, routine truck driving work involving the operation of all single & tandem axle trucks of gross vehicle weight of 18,000 kgs or greater in the Solid Waste and Recycling Department. An incumbent loads, secures, transports and unloads materials under varying traffic and field conditions; cleans, checks and performs light servicing work on the unit; maintains simple records and work reports; may supervise one or more subordinates engaged in loading and unloading materials, tools and equipment. An incumbent works under general supervision of a foreman, exercising considerable independence of action and judgment in performing work while remaining within defined operating limits, methods and procedures. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; cleans, checks and performs light servicing work on the unit driven. Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, plus thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment. Considerable knowledge of the proper methods used in loading securing, transporting, and unloading of materials including container placement. Considerable knowledge of Municipal street layout and related departmental operations. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors. Mechanical aptitude to perform minor servicing tasks on large vehicles. Skill in the safe and efficient operation of single & tandem axle trucks with mechanized fully automated rear, front and side lift arms or forks. Sufficient strength and manual agility to perform manual work. A Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake endorsement, is required.

Clause 6 Application of Seniority:
Appointments to regular full time, temporary full time, regular part time and temporary part time positions shall be determined by seniority as defined in Article 6 of the Outside Collective Agreement. These appointments shall be subject to the successful passing of the skill test(s) applicable to the classification, that they are not currently subject to a performance management plan, and have no discipline or recorded safety infractions in the previous eighteen (18) months.
