The Service Mechanical Designer (SMD) is responsible for all mechanical design activity in the ATS Life Science Cambridge technical services department. Responsibilities include making design changes for retrofit projects, generating concept designs, releasing drawings for production, providing input for quoting design work effort, and supporting the service team.
Responsibilities include:
Education
A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of mechanical design experience required.
A minimum of 3 years’ experience with a focus on automation design or equivalent required; or 10+ years of Machine Building, Integration & Troubleshooting in Automated Assembly systems, with CAD experience.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Displays professionalism and has well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work with all levels of customer and ATS management in a multi-disciplined engineering environment under pressure.
Automation knowledge and experience is an asset.
Attention to detail and being well organized in engineering document management system is essential.
Ability to quickly gain knowledge to readily support troubleshooting systems.
Successful candidates will be self-motivated & can problem-solve when the process or next steps are not clear.
The candidate must be able to work independently; however, should be comfortable asking questions when the path forward is unclear.
Must have a thorough knowledge of drafting principles and GD&T principles and how they are applied.
Must be proficient in Draft Sight and SolidWorks.
Experience with Microsoft 365 software applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Teams.
Must be capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
Must be capable of working as part of a team.
A thorough knowledge of the use of pneumatics and hydraulics.
A thorough knowledge of the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDTs, etc.).
Must demonstrate an ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design issues.
Able to independently complete all specific responsibilities with minimal supervision.
