Job description

The Certified Power Cable Apprentice is responsible for the construction, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of underground electrical and distribution systems. Working with all voltage types, the incumbent is expected to maintain and repair underground powerlines, cables, and associated equipment such as insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, metering systems, transformers, and lighting and control systems. They are also expected to splice and terminate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks.

These duties will be performed according to the skills and knowledge of the incumbent, under the supervision of a Certified Power Cable Person.

Note: Successful applicants may rotate through various work centres and departments to gain comprehensive experience of Toronto Hydro’s distribution system.

The incumbent is expected to adhere to ethical standards, follow the established code of business conduct, policies, internal control procedures, laws, and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Demonstrate safe work practices and adhere to safety rules and regulations.
  2. Communicate effectively with customers and staff.
  3. Engage in job planning with the Crew Leader and/or Manager and follow the plan.
  4. Select, operate, and maintain tools and equipment.
  5. Install and maintain conductors and control wiring.
  6. Troubleshoot, install, and maintain the underground distribution system.
  7. Assist in connecting, applying, analyzing, and fault locating equipment, including testing and grounding on 600V systems.
  8. Install, maintain, and remove transformers up to 27.6kV.
  9. Troubleshoot, install, operate, and maintain system protection, control, and instrumentation equipment.
  10. Handle energized lines using rubber protective equipment and live line tools.
  11. Provide insulation while working on cables energized up to 750V.
  12. Perform switching operations on secondary (up to 750V) and primary (up to 13.8kV) equipment.
  13. Follow regulatory and employer procedures, identify defects and dangers, and apply discretion to resolve health and safety issues.
REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Minimum two-year college diploma or one-year Electrical Techniques Certificate with practical experience, or 309A Electrician (Red Seal) certification with relevant experience.
  2. Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License or higher, with the ability to obtain DZ or ARZ license post-hire.
  3. Physically capable of performing duties in all weather conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces.
  4. Ability to interpret distribution system construction drawings and supporting documents.
  5. Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations such as Electrical Safety Authority Regulation 22/04, Toronto Hydro policies, WHMIS, CPR, and First Aid.
  6. Proficiency in PC Windows environment and related software.
  7. Strong safety, customer service, teamwork, adherence to policies, problem-solving, dependability, and collaboration skills.
