Job description

Under immediate supervision, a Meter Reader performs routine clerical work in the reading of meters for electrical and/or water consumption, and records volumes used by residential and commercial consumers.

  • Walks or drives over established routes and takes readings of meter dials
  • Inspects meters for defects, damage and unauthorized connections
  • Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action
  • Checks reading to locate abnormal consumption and records reason for fluctuations
  • Assigns control numbers on all meter cards used in routing consumers
  • Prepares daily report as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of meter reading procedures
  • Knowledge of the geography and street locations of the island
  • Knowledge of the hazards of the trade and precautions to be observed
  • Ability to verbally express oneself in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to write legibly and follow moderately complex written and oral instructions
  • Ability to make simple arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public
  • Must possess a valid V.I. driver's license.

High school diploma, or equivalent, including courses in the electrical trade.
