The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

MATHEMATICS SUPPORT TEACHER - Shelburne Elementary Schools

The Mathematics Support Teacher will work with; to provide students daily mathematics instruction which will address gaps in student learning, and with teachers and school-based administrators to improve instruction as a means of improving student learning.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate
  • Bachelor Education in Elementary Education
  • Minimum five (5) years recent, successful classroom teaching experience in mathematics instruction at grades Primary-6
  • Leadership experience with mathematics initiatives at the classroom, school, region, and/or provincial level(s)

Successful intervention and coaching require that the Mathematics Support Teachers have substantial knowledge, skills and understanding in several key areas. These include:

  • the current mathematics curriculum
  • authentic, balanced assessment strategies
  • effective strategies for intervention and instruction based on current research
  • knowledge of how students learn mathematics
  • knowledge of mathematical misconceptions and common student errors
  • strategies for supporting students and teachers to become self-monitoring and self-extending learners
  • strong oral and written, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills
  • strategies for developing and maintaining positive relationships built on trust, and collaboration to enhance planning, problem solving, risk taking, and decision making
  • time management strategies to gain the maximum benefits from mathematics intervention and coaching
  • positive perspective on change and support others in the change process
  • awareness of and participation in a range of professional learning opportunities
  • analyze problems and formulate recommendations that result in improved student learning and achievement
  • strategies for monitoring, assessing, evaluating, and reporting on progress and success of intervention and coaching
  • use of technology and the ability to integrate digital assets into the learning environment
  • use of data to improve student learning and achievement
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mathematics Support Teachers are expected to:

  • provide coaching support to teachers along with principals, and small group and individual mathematics intervention to students within the framework established by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD).
  • collaborate with classroom teachers and school-based administrators to identify students requiring intervention.
  • work in classrooms with teachers to improve each teacher’s classroom-based instruction and assessment practices, and pedagogical and content knowledge.
  • provide planning and facilitation of mathematics professional development at region, school, and individual level.
  • implement strategies, activities, and techniques for promoting student learning based on each student’s prior knowledge, skills, and learning needs.
  • work in classrooms with students and classroom teachers to support mathematics development and the transfer of skills and strategies.
  • use assessment to determine next steps.
  • attend meetings and ongoing professional development provided for mathematics support teachers.
  • monitor, assess, evaluate, and report on the impact of mathematics initiatives.
  • maintain and submit records as outlined by the EECD mathematics intervention/coaching initiatives.
