Job description

As a level one Field Service Technician, this individual must be team-oriented and flexible, actively seeking to share information and assist peers. Possesses solid communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrates good electronic and mechanical repair troubleshooting methodology and maintains at least an intermediate technical level of product knowledge. Ability to read and follow electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic schematics to assist in isolating fault to root cause components or assemblies. Cross-trains on products serviced in the field, with basic proficiency in servicing the X-Ray and Cargo Inspection Systems product lines. General heavy commercial vehicle repair and setup skills are required. Willingness to work on special projects, some of high visibility, as assigned. Looks for common-mode problem occurrences and seeks resolutions independently or with team support. Has a working knowledge of business PC applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to provide clear, concise information summaries. Troubleshoots, services, installs, and repairs X-Ray and Cargo Inspection equipment at customer sites. Maintains field service logs and filing systems to organize all work until completion. Demonstrates initiative and dedication by utilizing downtime effectively and exceeding customer and company requirements. Conducts follow-up calls to ensure customer satisfaction.

Duties & Responsibilities

SPECIFIC DUTIES, ACTIVITIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO :

  • Complete and maintain product training and certification for all serviced products.
  • Meet service repair and preventative maintenance needs, ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Respond as required per customer contracts and manager requests.
  • Install, repair, and maintain equipment in the field, including electrical, computer (hardware and software), mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, and vehicle equipment.
  • Provide customer training as needed.
  • Document all inspections, maintenance, and repairs; submit paperwork promptly.
  • Order, install, and manage parts and repair cycle times and returns.
  • Prepare formal reports.
  • Maintain tools and test equipment properly, ensuring calibration.
  • Assess performance using field support data.
  • Review, record, and submit expenses timely.
  • Provide technical support to customers and service professionals.
  • Maintain clear and concise communication, both oral and written.
  • Control and minimize costs through available measures.
  • Travel, overtime, and work outside regular hours may be required.
  • Uphold Smiths Detection core values.
  • Comply with health, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Follow applicable Canadian export control and security regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required.

The Individual

Education / Training :

Associate’s Degree or related trade certification (electrical, electronic, mechanical) or military training. Equivalent experience is acceptable. Over 3 years of related electrical or mechanical field service experience. Computer literacy in MS Office and aptitude for learning specialized software.

Experience :

Minimum of 3 years troubleshooting and field repair experience with electrical and electronic systems.

Knowledge / Skills :

Excellent communication skills, customer focus, and teamwork orientation. Responsive to customer issues. Willing and able to travel on short notice. Bilingual in French and English preferred. May supervise others on projects. Security clearance required, passing a federal background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : Typically off-site at customer locations, including ports, airports, and other facilities. Outdoor work in various elements required.
