Reports To: Traditional Programs Manager

Job Summary:

The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is seeking an Interpreter responsible for providing interpreter services to individuals who do not have English as their first language. The Interpreter ensures comfort, support, community interface, navigation, and non-clinical assistance to minimize cross-cultural institutional and health system barriers. The role specifically involves complete bi-directional cultural and linguistic interpretation to optimize patient care, care planning, and service delivery for First Nation clients within the Meno Ya Win Health Centre.

Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written in English)
  • Proficient and fluent in one or more Sioux Lookout area First Nation languages (Cree, Oji-Cree, Swampy Cree, Ojibway)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the interpretive process
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a positive, caring approach
  • Good understanding of cross-cultural issues
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Proficient with computers
  • Medical Interpreter certification an asset
  • Ability to communicate in First Nation Syllabics an asset
Job Duties:
  • Provide bi-directional interpreting services to patients, residents, family, and service providers at SLMHC & ECU
  • Accurately articulate and report information, conveying clients’ questions, concerns, and messages in accordance with risk management directives and client data reporting
  • Maintain accurate daily records of all service requests and provisions
  • Willingness to work assigned shifts, including 8 and 12-hour rotations of day and night shifts
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all client and visitor matters
  • Perform other duties as assigned
