Qualifications

The Opportunity

Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Programmer - Aquatics, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Lifeguard/Instructor (PT) position is responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers, class participants and guests at the City of Barrie’s pools and beaches. Specifically, this position rotates between instructing aquatics lesson programs and monitoring recreational open swim programs. Overall, this position plays an integral role in providing a safe environment for swimmers, class participants and guests of the City of Barrie’s pools by acting as a Lifeguard during open swim programs and an Aquatics Instructor during lesson programs.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • National Lifeguard (NL) Pool Certification from the Lifesaving Society
  • Swim Instructor Certification from the Lifesaving Society
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate from HIGH FIVE National within three (3) months of hire
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission and values
  • Demonstrated ability to demonstrate/participate in aquatics lesson programs for the duration of a class session
  • Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to stand for extended periods of time
  • Basic oral and written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as required

Location: Various Recreation Location

Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.

Wage: This is a casual part-time non-union position with the following 2024 pay range:

  • Hourly Pay Rate: $20.21 to $26.13
