Job Summary

Reporting to the Project Director or designate, the Bridges & Structures Engineer leads, directs, and exercises functional authority over all aspects of Bridges, Buildings, Culverts, Retaining Walls, and any other load-bearing Structure projects including planning, organizing, budgeting, and cost reporting; ensures that the goals and objectives of each project are accomplished on schedule and within budget, and that quality and safety standards are met; directs staff in successfully accomplishing goals and objectives.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Determine the forces and stresses in railway bridges/culverts and bridge components;
  2. Prescribe safe loading conditions for railway bridges/culverts;
  3. Prescribe inspection and maintenance procedures for railway bridges/culverts;
  4. Design repairs and modifications to railway bridges/culverts;
  5. Authorize or restrict the operation of railway traffic over a bridge according to its immediate condition or state of repair;
  6. Supervise the construction, modification, or repair of a railway bridge, culvert, manhole, or catch basin in conformance with specifications, plans, and instructions;
  7. Review project proposals and plans to understand project requirements (time frame, budget, safety, quality, staffing, materials, and equipment requirements);
  8. Develop an execution plan that outlines staffing, materials, equipment, subcontracting, and other services necessary to deliver the project on time and within budget;
  9. Verify estimates based on detailed review of proposal specifications;
  10. Coordinate with department managers to establish work plans and staffing for each phase of the project;
  11. Organize and conduct meetings with project staff and management to communicate information related to project requirements;
  12. Develop and manage customer relationships and expectations, progress reports, communication, paperwork, meetings, etc.;
  13. Lead project activities to ensure execution in accordance with designs, budgets, and schedules;
  14. Maintain a dedication to safety at all times by acting as a role model, providing education, and enforcing safe work practices;
  15. Monitor and oversee the efficient use of materials and equipment and the contractual performance of the project;
  16. Monitor and oversee onsite activities, quality, productivity, progress, and safety of employees and subcontractors;
  17. Provide leadership and supervision to staff, identify goals and objectives, monitor and assess performance, and identify training and development opportunities;
  18. Oversee financial aspects of contracts;
  19. Provide technical assistance and recommend construction methods and equipment;
  20. Anticipate potential roadblocks and develop solutions to prevent issues;
  21. Represent the company in project meetings;
  22. Prepare written reports and/or updates for management, clients, and project teams;
  23. Administer financial tracking systems to monitor project costs and estimates;
  24. Perform other related duties as required.

Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an Accredited Canadian University (or approved equivalent);
  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario or another Canadian Province;
  • 2 years relevant experience in Railway Operations;
  • Thorough knowledge of construction industry practices, methods, processes, and standards;
  • Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of project accounting, project controls (cost, schedule, change management), material management, contract management, safety, and quality;
  • Requirement to pass Physical Aptitude tests for Safety Critical Position (Vision, Hearing, Stress Tests);
  • Requirement to complete essential basic Safety Qualifications: First Aid, Emergency Response, Hot Work, Work at Heights, Work in Enclosed Spaces;
  • Canadian Railway Operations Qualifications and Competencies (e.g., CROR, E-Railsafe, GEI, MOBR, CWR, WEST) are required but not prerequisites (training will be provided);
  • AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering Chapters 6, 8, 15 proven knowledge is mandatory but not a prerequisite (training will be provided).

Talents and Abilities:

  • Ability to apply, interpret, and understand Standards, Specifications, contract law and language;
  • Proficiency utilizing design and construction applications such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Office products, Primavera, Hard Dollar, Austin Lane or JD Edwards software;
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong client relations, influencing skills, and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work is 50% onsite Railway Right-of-Way; 50% Office or remote;
  • Schedule involves some dayshift, afternoon shift, nightshift, weekend work;
  • Frequently sits, stands, walks, reads, writes, and uses a computer keyboard;
  • May be exposed to harsh weather conditions;
  • May work at various sites across Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes.
