Job description

Location: Toronto-based preferred (Hybrid/Remote with in-person relationship building)

Type: Part-time / Flexible, $25-$35 per hour, 10 hours (probably more to be honest) per month for 1 - 3 months (or longer!)

Hi there,

I'm Alexander Paul Burton—an independent queer author, poet, musician, and self-publisher based in downtown Toronto. My work spans fantasy (The Hollow Vale), poetry and essays on identity, and a reflective series called #MillennialTruths. I also compose music, promote my own albums, and am building a new literary arts magazine centred around alternative voices, migration, queerness, and art as survival.

I'm looking for someone to join me as a Creative & Literary Promotion Assistant—someone versatile, dependable, and creative, who’s interested in working across genres and mediums. While much of the work can be done remotely, I’d really love to build this relationship in person over time, even if we just start with the occasional meet-up downtown. As a queer artist, I find mutual trust and authenticity flow best in real life first.

This isn’t your average "assistant" role. It’s a flexible position with real creative involvement and room to grow as we collaborate on marketing, publishing, and outreach efforts.

What You’ll Work On:

1. Book Promotion & Literary Outreach

  • Promoting my fantasy series The Hollow Vale, my poetry books, and reflective works like #MillennialTruths
  • Reaching out to bookstores (indie and chain, in Canada, the UK, and the US) to pitch events, signings, and consignment opportunities
  • Creating simple, compelling sell sheets and outreach materials for different books
  • Coordinating promotional campaigns and tracking who we’ve spoken to
  • Helping organise launches or pop-ups (virtual and local)

2. Music & Multimedia Promotion

  • Supporting the launch of original neoclassical and electronic music tied to the books
  • Sharing content across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Spotify, etc.
  • Helping pitch songs and albums to blogs, playlists, or press where appropriate
  • Creating simple visuals or moodboards (Canva etc.) to promote both book and music releases

3. Creative Project Support & Magazine Development

  • Assisting in the development of a new literary arts magazine spotlighting marginalised voices
  • Supporting submissions, editorial calendars, social media plans, and launch strategy
  • Bringing new ideas to the table—from cross-promotion to design suggestions to themes
  • Helping with light admin and organising behind-the-scenes systems for creative projects

What I’m Looking For:

  • You love books and independent art—and ideally you write, read, or create in some way yourself
  • You’re Toronto-based or nearby, and open to meeting in person occasionally to build trust
  • You understand or are curious about queer creative life, and respect the emotional depth behind it
  • You’re reliable, flexible, organised, and bring your own ideas to the table
  • You’re comfortable with email, Canva, Instagram, or at least willing to learn as we go
  • You’re someone who can run with a task but isn’t afraid to check in and collaborate

Logistics:

  • This is a paid, flexible part-time role. We’ll start with 10+ hours/month and see where it leads.
  • Perfect for a student, freelancer, or someone wanting to break into indie publishing or arts admin.
  • Hybrid/remote role, but preference goes to those local to Toronto who want to be part of something real.

To Apply:

Send me a short message, CV, or just a heartfelt note. Tell me who you are, what kind of creative work excites you, and why you think we might vibe. You don’t have to be polished or corporate—you just need to care.

Let’s build something brilliant together.

— Alexander
