Leadhand Arborist (Temporary Full-Time)

1. Directs, supervises, instructs and works with staff and contractors toward the completion of work to best meet arboriculture standards.
2. Applies pesticides to control insects, primarily Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) using proper application methods.
3. Maintains trees from the ground, operates tree truck with aerial device or climbs trees using proper accepted tree climbing techniques and current arboriculture practices.
4. Works within crews in tree trimming, tree removal, stump grinding and other vegetation management duties.
5. Performs a variety of arboriculture practices including tree health and hazard assessments and tree plant survey and assessments.
6. Ensures that equipment is properly maintained and operated and performs minor servicing of equipment.
7. Records data related to the operation of the Urban Forestry Program.
8. Obtains and manages underground utility locates for tree plant and stump grinding operations.
9. Provides information to and responds to inquiries from the public regarding tree related concerns.
10. Participates in work related safety training programs, staff training and development.
11. Carries out caretaker and maintenance duties on winter rinks.
12. Compiles time sheets, work orders, compensation and incident reports.
13. Performs other Park Worker duties as may be assigned.

1. Diploma in Arboriculture or Forestry with a minimum of 3 years of experience conducting active tree care using aerial lifts and approved climbing techniques; Must possess a valid Ministry of Environment Exterminator License for Land application of pesticides; or
2. Completion of a two year post-secondary education program in a related discipline with a minimum of five (5) years of experience conducting active tree care using aerial lifts and approved climbing techniques;
3. Must possess a valid Ministry of Environment Exterminator License for Land application of pesticides; and
4. Current certification as an Arborist from either the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or Ministry of Training Colleges & Universities (MTCU);
5. Must possess a valid certificate in chain saw operation.

1. Must be proficient in the operation of all equipment used in this classification.
2. Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions.
3. Must have the ability to deal with the public in a tactful, courteous manner.
4. Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision.
5. Must possess and maintain a valid Class “D” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent with a ‘Z’ endorsement.
6. Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation.
7. Must have a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it applies to this work.

1. Current Working at Heights Training certification through the Ministry of Labour.

1. Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation.
2. May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified).
3. Must be physically able of performing the assigned duties.
4. Must possess City certification for aerial lifts, chipper operation.
5. Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC).
6. Must be willing to work overtime and be available for emergency call outs.
