Job Description for Principal - Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education administers the public school system within Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students across 38 schools.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Valid Nova Scotia teacher's license.
  • Master's of Education in Instructional/Educational Leadership or equivalent leadership education preferred.
  • Previous administrative experience preferred.
  • Successful instructional leadership experience at relevant levels preferred.
  • At least five years of successful teaching in a public school.
  • Proven leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to utilize technology effectively in school management and instruction.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementing instructional programs.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and professional growth of staff.
  • Expertise in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Skills in facilities management, record keeping, financial management, and staff supervision.
  • Ability to perform duties as outlined in Section 38 of the Education Act.

Key Responsibilities:

The Principal acts as the educational leader of the school, managing staff and ensuring a safe, respectful, and culturally responsive learning environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Implementing curriculum and school programs.
  • Maintaining attendance records and reporting.
  • Promoting student attendance and safety.
  • Engaging with parents and stakeholders.
  • Managing staff recruitment, evaluation, and discipline.
  • Leading professional development and school improvement initiatives.
  • Participating in school advisory councils and committees.
  • Overseeing financial and operational aspects of the school.
  • Ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.

Additional duties include championing regional initiatives, fostering staff development, managing facilities, and maintaining health and safety standards.

Terms of employment follow the Non-union Compensation Framework and Public School Administrators Association guidelines, with a salary range of $105,065 to $131,331. Teaching components may vary annually based on staffing and enrollment.
