Job description

Objective: Assists in the daily activities of the Materials and Process Engineering Group.


Coordinate/manage projects both within the Materials and Process Engineering Group and with other departments or external customers as necessary.


Work to be performed:


The work defined below reflects principal duties and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all work requirements.

  1. Review and approval of planning after checking for compliance to customer requirements.
  2. Coordinate First Part Qualification activities. Preparation of plans and reports in support thereof.
  3. Internal technical point of contact regarding customer specifications/requirements.
  4. Liaise with customer engineering groups as necessary to support:
    1. FPQ activities
    2. New process approvals
    3. Equipment qualification/requalification
    4. Requests for deviations
  5. Prepare internal documents:
    1. Material test planning for incoming consumables and material requalification.
    2. Paint Engineering Instructions.
    3. Chemical process flow charts.
  6. Determine appropriate rework plans for discrepant parts in accordance with customer specification allowances. Preparation of proposed dispositions where MRB authority is required.
  7. Investigate and resolve manufacturing issues and provide technical assistance to Operations and Quality Assurance.
  8. Conduct technical analysis of existing processes and new customers & process specifications including chemical processing (conversion coatings, anodizing, etc), painting, heat treatment, and non-destructive testing.
  9. Conduct analysis to characterize performance or determine reasons for failure of tools, materials, parts, or processes.
  10. Promote standardization across business activities.
  11. Develop and integrate suppliers, processes, materials, data and technology to meet manufacturing and delivery requirements.
  12. Resolves technical problems of significant impact to performance, cost or schedule.
  13. Coordinates and implements new engineering principles, theories, advanced technologies and concepts.
  14. Validates and ensures production readiness of solutions to complex problems.
  15. Uses project management tools to meet cost, technical, and schedule requirements.

Establish, plan, organize and control policies, procedures and methods within the department; maintain relationships with customers, contractors, vendors, general public; may be responsible for other employees. Must be committed to participating in creating a safe work environment for all workers in the Company by respecting safety rules and regulations, cooperating with workplace investigations, participating in worker training and identifying substandard acts or conditions.


Effort:

Mental effort is of moderate intensity at more than 4 hours per day or high intensity at 2-4 hours per day with respect to concentration, attentiveness, duration and intensity of effort, thinking, watching, listening, verifying, checking numbers, creating, designing. Physical effort is of low intensity, more than 2 hours per day with respect to duration and intensity of effort, fine or coarse movements, energy required (standing, walking, lifting, keyboarding, pushing, pulling, sitting, packing, assembling, bending, twisting).


Job Working Conditions:

Requires mental skill and concentration with significant use of memory; little physical effort; high level of mental effort requires critical thinking in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, for formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Occasional exposure to noise, dust, heat, fumes, etc. but daily operations are normally performed within a typical interior/office work environment. Environmental conditions are of some exposure to disagreeable elements with respect to dirt, dust, grease, oil, temperature, distractions, multiple demands, poor ventilation, verbal abuse, and/or noise. Hazards are of minor risk of injury, harm or illness with respect to the likely potential of injury harm, illness, infectious disease involving chemicals, fumes, smoke, machinery, equipment or threat of violence.

Hard Skills:

  1. Ability to read and interpret aerospace drawings.
  2. Familiarity/experience using CATIA 3D modeling Software.
  3. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite of software.
  4. General knowledge of typical aircraft rework/repair procedures.
  5. Experience working with military and /or aerospace industry standards such as MIL specs, Federal specs, AMS standards, etc.
  6. Knowledge or experience regarding materials testing.
  7. Knowledge of common aerospace processes, for example:
    1. Forming of aluminum.
    2. Heat treating.
    3. Chemical processing.
    4. Priming and painting.
    5. Adhesive bonding.
    6. Fabrication of composite parts.

Soft Skills:

  1. Motivated self starter – someone who isn’t afraid to ask questions and learn from experienced employees.
  2. Collaborative – role will require frequent work with various departments at Fleet.
  3. Problem solving - role will require in-depth problem solving, with implementation of sustained corrective actions.
  4. Ability to plan – some tasks will require advance planning and coordination with other departments, i.e. FPQ. Coordination will be required in order to ensure required activities occur in a timely, organized manner with minimal impact to production.
  5. Ability to interpret technical documents (customer specifications).

Education / Experience:

  1. Degree or diploma in engineering program.
  2. or
  3. Science degree with mechanics of materials supplementary courses.
  4. 3-5 years related experience.
  5. Prior aerospace management experience would be an asset.

Qualification Assessment:

Ongoing informal observation/assessment of work performance provides continuing evidence of capabilities and proficiencies.


Training Requirements:

  1. Core training.
  2. WHMIS.
  3. Health & Safety.
  4. On-the-job training on essential job duties and equipment.

Approval Authorization: Employee must be approved by the Director/Manager of Human Resources as having the necessary skills, education and experience to perform the work.


Salary Range: up to $85k
