Job Responsibilities
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections as outlined in the Highway Traffic Act for both the truck and the trailer.
- Call into the dispatch department for upcoming day’s work assignments either the night before or the morning of, as advised by the dispatcher, and notify them of delays in excess of ½ hour.
- Follow safe driving techniques and practice defensive driving.
- Adhere to all laws, including Federal, Regional, and jurisdictional regulations, as outlined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standards.
- Ensure driver envelopes include Bills of Lading, driver logs, equipment inspections, and all other customer and Sylvite documents required for invoicing or the Safety and Compliance Department.
Delivery / Pickup of Loads
- Arrive at the customer location at the specified time.
- Follow customer requirements for access to dock doors and exit from the truck yard.
- Load and unload trailer contents safely, following required procedures.
- Handle inventory securely and follow security measures as required.
- Maintain professional conduct at customer locations and inform the dispatcher immediately about any customer issues.
Other Duties
- Pickup and deliver company trucks.
- Ride along with less-experienced drivers, providing coaching and feedback to Safety and Compliance for areas of improvement.
- Participate in modified work or other miscellaneous duties if unable to perform all driving responsibilities or if trucks/tractors are unavailable.
- Complete all documents fully and accurately; seek assistance if unsure how to fill out any documentation.
- Report all accidents to the Fleet Manager as soon as possible, within 8 hours.
- Fill out accident reports on-site with the driver accident kit, making notes to keep information current, and participate in Accident Review Board when requested.
- Provide updated documents such as driver’s license (including renewal within 30 days of address change).
Transportation Regulations
- Comply with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standards and highway traffic legislation in any jurisdiction of operation.
- Follow all legislation regarding hours of work and maximum hours worked between breaks, whether provincial, state, or federal.
- Immediately report any offences or charges related to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standards or highway legislation within 8 hours.
Education, Experience, and Training Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years verifiable experience as an A-Z Driver.
- Good CVOR and abstract reports.
- Clean Police Clearance Certificate.
- Successfully pass an extensive company-provided road test.
