Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Staff Field Engineer to play a critical role in the successful deployment and long-term operation of Form's grid scale battery deployments. As part of the Commercial Operations group, you will be part of the foundational team that is building the commissioning and field service processes for Form's unique product. You will collaborate closely with Product Engineering, Test and Validation, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to drive rapid resolution of issues and product design improvements. You should be comfortable working in the field, executing tasks yourself, directing other engineers and technicians, and coordinating closely with internal and customer stakeholders. This role will also interface with third-party suppliers of system components such as inverters, transformers, and power plant controllers. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

What you'll do:
  • Develop and operationalize the commissioning, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair processes for Form's fielded battery systems

  • Execute commissioning and field service tasks on internal test beds and at commercial customer project sites

  • Perform remote and on-site diagnostics and troubleshooting of equipment using custom software, SQL, data acquisition and energy management software

  • Create test routines using Python or equivalent that evaluate the health of operating battery systems

  • Define data signatures that identify unhealthy subsystems in Form's batteries and incorporate them into Form's fleet monitoring tools

  • Design and build custom electromechanical tooling required to troubleshoot and repair fielded battery systems

  • Work closely with Form's Product Engineering and Product Management teams to develop a deep technical understanding of the product and its application

  • Support and lead cross-functional efforts to determine the root cause of field failures and to drive permanent resolution of these issues with Manufacturing and Engineering teams

  • Work closely with Form's software development team to define and develop digital tools to interfacing with battery equipment

  • Travel to client or project sites 50-80% of the time

What you'll bring:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 7-10 years of experience in renewable energy system commissioning or service engineering roles

  • Strong understanding of SCADA communication protocols such as Modbus and DNP3, networking design and operation, power plant control systems, battery management systems, and utility relay and metering equipment

  • Prior experience with troubleshooting electrical/electronic and mechanical systems, such as HVDC power converters, HVAC systems, and/or fluid delivery systems

  • Familiarity with distributed, industrial-grade control systems that use microcontrollers and CAN bus communications or equivalent

  • Ability to manipulate large data sets using SQL, Python, or equivalent

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven cross-functional leadership and collaboration skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce clear and concise technical documentation

  • Valid driver's license
