Reporting to the Director, Fleet Safety, the Fleet Safety Advisor will support the team by providing CVOR Compliance & Education, supporting operations, and liaising between the Fleet Operations Team, Corporate HSE Team, and Operations Teams. This position is part of a larger Fleet Safety Team across Canada.
This role primarily oversees Eastern Ontario, from the Quebec border to Belleville, including Quebec Operations.
Primary Scope of Role
- Serve as a subject matter expert for CVOR, Provincial Highway Traffic Acts, Regulations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Federal Law, and GIP Policies & Procedures related to Transportation Safety.
- Ensure GIP drivers comply with all legislation and company policies.
- Conduct weekly site and shop audits to verify documentation related to drivers, vehicles, and maintenance meets CVOR requirements.
- Monitor driver Hours of Service via paper or Geotab Drive ELD system, coaching drivers and operations to prevent violations.
- Provide detailed reports on assessments, trends, and certifications as needed.
- Conduct collision and incident investigations, implement corrective actions, and manage files from start to finish.
- Assist in developing Fleet Safety training content, Policies, Procedures, and SWPs.
- Re-train GIP drivers proactively or remedially to reinforce safety policies and improve driving skills.
Specific Duties
- Act as the main 24/7 contact for CVOR, Highway Traffic Acts, Regulations, Dangerous Goods, Federal Law, and GIP Policies & Procedures.
- Conduct field observations or ride-alongs with assessments and feedback to drivers and management.
- Perform early morning yard visits to observe pre-trip inspections, answer questions, and conduct safety talks.
- Review incident reports related to collisions, public incidents, and CVOR matters, ensuring proper corrective actions.
- Organize and deliver classroom and practical courses on topics like CVOR Awareness, Defensive Driving, Cargo Securement, Pre-Trip Inspections, Electronic Logs, etc.
- Monitor weekly GPS safety scores and re-train high-risk drivers, assigning online training as needed.
- Adapt to a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
- Travel overnight or long distances to GIP sites.
- Flex working hours to meet operational needs, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Balance fieldwork and administrative duties regularly.
- Meet data compilation deadlines for team reports weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
Position Requirements
- Minimum Grade 12 Education.
- Reside within 1.5 hours of Ottawa.
- Post-secondary education in Law, Transport & Logistics, or HSE is an asset.
- Experience in Dispatching, Driver Training, Logistics Supervision, or Safety is an asset.
- Bilingual (Basic French and English, written and oral).
- Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, WhatsApp, PowerPoint.
- Comfortable using smartphones and safety management apps for field visits.
- Clean Drivers Abstract with no demerit points.
- Minimum Class G Licence; a Commercial Licence is an asset.
- Experience with ELD systems, especially GeoTab Drive.
- Strong understanding of CVOR, Pre-Trips, Hours of Service, and Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
