SUMMARY:
Youth Care Practitioners (YCPs) in the YRC operated by The Link report to their immediate Supervisor and are responsible for implementing all aspects of the day-to-day functioning of the program. YCPs are expected to provide ongoing, culturally sensitive care while adhering to organizational policies and procedures. A major focus of their work is to support high-risk children and youth who are at risk of or have experienced sexual exploitation.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain awareness of all youth's whereabouts accessing the shelter, in accordance with program policies.
- Interact with young people to foster feelings of safety and acceptance.
- Develop, manage, facilitate, and direct daily program activities.
- Implement program routines in collaboration with the Supervisor.
- Keep records and prepare reports as required.
- Ensure all receipts for program purchases are collected and forwarded to the Supervisor.
- Observe, evaluate, and document daily life events following recording procedures.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure consistent experiences and intervention plans for youth accessing services from the StreetReach Shelter Program.
- Build relationships with high-risk youth involved in the StreetReach Programs (Community Outreach and Shelter).
- Meet with youth individually and in groups to discuss their issues, experiences, and access to community resources to reduce their risk of exploitation.
- Intervene in daily life experiences to help youth recognize exploitation risks and encourage safer choices.
- Assist youth in identifying supportive significant others and fostering healthy connections.
- Participate in culturally responsive decision-making regarding therapeutic methods based on observations and interactions.
- Engage youth in recreational activities and developmentally appropriate programming within the facility.
- Plan meals and grocery shopping, involving youth when appropriate, and encourage participation in cooking and baking.
- Assess clothing needs, ensure appropriate clothing for seasons, and teach youth clothing care.
- Maintain records and inventory at intake and departure from the shelter.
- Assist with maintenance and cleanliness of the physical environment, including the building, yard, and program vehicles and appliances.
- Work with youth to promote a clean, healthy, and safe environment daily.
- Advocate for a healthy and safe environment for young people.
- Perform any other job-related tasks as assigned by the supervisor or manager.
Experience
- Understanding and appreciation of Indigenous issues within a child welfare context.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and ability to operate within a networked environment, including report writing and communication via email.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations and maintain confidentiality within a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge, experience, and understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions.
- Ability to provide services through an Indigenous lens, focusing on strengths and experiences of Indigenous children, youth, families, and communities.
- Understanding of the historical and ongoing impacts of intergenerational barriers and oppression faced by Indigenous peoples.
- Knowledge of child care, school, family systems, and child welfare preferred.
- Willingness to undertake required training per organizational policies, including Crisis De-escalation, Suicide Intervention, Colonization Awareness, and Child Development.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in youth care; a combination of education and experience may be considered.
Conditions of Employment
- Willingness to obtain training such as Crisis De-escalation, Suicide Intervention, Colonization Awareness, and Child Development.
- Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C certification or willingness to obtain.
- Satisfactory background checks, including Criminal Record, Child and Adult Abuse Registries, conducted within the last 3 months.

Additional Details
SALARY RANGE: $18.00/hour including a 5% northern allowance.
HOURS OF WORK: Full-time, 8 hours per day, overnight shifts, with schedule depending on program needs.
