Job Description :

Reporting to the Dean for the School of Health Studies, the Academic Chair is responsible for providing academic leadership in the management and administration of faculty, support staff, and students in the Nursing Studies Department. The Academic Chair is responsible for establishing a strategic direction for the Department that aligns with the College’s strategic plan and Faculty goals.

The Academic Chair oversees the planning, development, delivery, quality assurance, and financial viability of the Department’s full-time post-secondary programs. They provide broad academic leadership in curriculum development, design, and evaluation, applied scholarship, and experiential learning to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The incumbent should have knowledge and experience in classroom and online curriculum delivery using various technologies.

The incumbent ensures that program offerings are responsive and relevant to student and community needs, develops and implements new initiatives reflecting technological, economic, and market changes, and aligns with industry standards, College, and Ministry guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Provides Academic Leadership :

Collaborates with the Dean to establish the Department’s strategic direction, aligning with the College’s plan and deploying resources accordingly.

Leads the development and implementation of new academic programs, ensuring they reflect current technology, economic trends, and market influences.

Builds partnerships with external communities, school boards, academic agencies, and universities to advance the Faculty’s vision and mission.

Promotes scholarly research and simulation-based learning, ensuring programs meet accreditation standards.

Assesses and responds to student needs, provides leadership in health forums, and supervises teaching and learning processes.

Responsible for Human Resources Management and Development :

Facilitates communication among faculty and support staff, fostering collaboration to support departmental and college objectives.

Directs teaching activities, recruits and develops faculty and staff, and promotes professional development.

Handles investigations, resolves disputes, advises students, and refers them to resources.

Recommends faculty and support staff appointments to the Dean and hires part-time and temporary staff.

Participates in Program Evaluation, Partnerships, and Marketing :

Provides leadership in curriculum review and ensures quality assurance processes are followed.

Implements initiatives from College and Government authorities, including strategic plans and employability skills development.

Establishes learning outcomes in line with policies and external agencies.

Builds relationships with industry, advisory committees, professional associations, and participates in student recruitment and placement initiatives.

Responsible for Department Operations :

Ensures compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and establishes safe procedures.

Maintains financial health of the department through analysis of enrollment, space, and costs.

Manages staff workloads, course loads, and equipment needs for efficiency.

Required Qualifications :

Master’s Degree in Health Discipline, Health Administration, or related fields; PhD preferred.

Current College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) RN registration without restrictions. Candidates with active applications with CNO may be considered.

At least nine (9) years of relevant experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory/management role.

Strong background in education/training, including teaching, curriculum development, or consultancy.

Commitment to student success, teaching excellence, and experiential learning in a post-secondary setting.

Management style that fosters initiative and creativity within organizational goals.

Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills for consensus building and articulating an academic vision.

Superior facilitation and conflict resolution skills;

Strong organizational, planning, and financial management skills.

Ability to engage with external community and develop partnerships.
