Personal Support Worker – Community Support Services (Casual)

Purpose
To assist with the provision of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), recreation programming, overnight monitoring, and behavior interventions for Overnight Stay Program participants, including frail elderly, dementia, mental health, and acquired brain injury populations.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist with the implementation and organization of client Instrumental Activities of Daily Living; assist clients with activities of daily living.
  2. Participate in meal preparation and recreational activities.
  3. Assess participants’ ability to ambulate and perform lifts and transfers; assist with ambulation as necessary.
  4. Provide appropriate interventions for participants exhibiting responsive behaviors, and document outcomes.
  5. Maintain a safe physical and psychosocial environment.
  6. Assist the Overnight Stay Team and Clinical Resource Worker with completing client profiles and care plans.
  7. Comply with St. Joseph's Health Centre’s Privacy policy based on PHIPA principles.
  8. Support ongoing staff professional development.
  9. Provide support during staff absences.
  10. Respond appropriately to emergency situations and guide team members.
  11. Document treatment protocols, medications administered, incidents, advice given, and other pertinent information on client charts.

Qualifications & Experience

  • PSW Certificate
  • Food Handler Certificate (must be obtained within one month of employment)
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn InterRAI CHA, PIECES assessment tools, and Gentle Persuasive Approach
  • ASIST preferred
  • Current CPR and BLS certificates
  • Good attendance record
  • Commitment to caring for older adults
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with community-based cognitively impaired and frail elderly populations
  • Teamwork ability and willingness
  • Experience in recreational program planning and delivery
