Qualifications

As a valued member, you will play a vital role in the upkeep and restoration of tools, equipment, and machinery for our esteemed engineering department. Your expertise will directly contribute to Union Pacific's commitment to delivering goods safely and efficiently to our valued customers across North America. Required Certifications

During your probationary period, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver. To qualify, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:

  1. Minimum age of 21 years
  2. Valid driver's license
  3. Acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  4. Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if operating vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. You will need to obtain your CDL during your probation.

Medical Requirements: You must meet the physical qualifications for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The final determination will be made by Union Pacific's Health and Medical Services, who may also impose additional medical requirements to ensure safe job performance, with or without accommodations.

Accountabilities
  • Inspect and maintain tools, roadway machines, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Conduct maintenance, repairs, and troubleshoot malfunctions.
  • Organize, track information, and coordinate team work.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, utilizing print and digital information.
  • Adhere to safety rules, practices, and procedures of the company and industry.
  • Foster positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers, and handle conflicts effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, operational guidelines, and FRA requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient computer literacy and basic keyboarding skills
  • Understanding and application of safety rules, with safe work habits and risk awareness
  • Ability to use both high and low precision measuring instruments
  • Basic arithmetic skills and ability to interpret tables, charts, and graphs
  • Ability to read schematic drawings of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Own a personal set of mechanics' tools if employed
  • Experience with large motor generators, high-voltage circuitry, electronics, or electro-mechanical systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Minimum of 4 years of verifiable experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic, or possession of a Journeyman's Mechanic's card
  • Successful completion of an English assessment prior to interview (see UP.jobs FAQs)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession or ability to obtain a CDL Class A or B during probation
  • Associate's degree or higher in electronics, control systems, motors, mechanics, diesel technology, or electrical components
  • Completion of formal training in electronics, control systems, motors, or electrical components
  • Experience outdoors in diverse weather conditions
  • Experience working near heavy moving equipment
  • Experience with personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces
  • Availability for various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends
Physical Requirements
  • Pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT)
  • Normal color vision and ability to interpret visual signals
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull between 50-150 lbs.
  • Perform physically strenuous work and occasional bending, stooping, kneeling
  • Frequent walking, maintaining balance, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination
Work Conditions
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
  • Work at heights of 20 feet or higher
  • Flexible work schedule including various shifts and days off
  • Willing to reside and work at designated locations
  • Follow PPE requirements
  • Travel extensively (up to 95-100%) for extended periods
  • Position governed by IAM
