Job description

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE, supported by approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission: “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable, and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing, and successful lifelong learners.” In 2024-2025, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and approximately 375 children attend pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in northeastern Nova Scotia, the SRCE’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond, covering about 11,000 square kilometers with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 7.5 hours/day; operational requirements may necessitate schedule flexibility.

Position Summary:

Working under the supervision of the SRCE SchoolsPlus Facilitator, the Community Outreach Worker will assist in delivering SchoolsPlus services and supports to students and their families.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work under the direct supervision of the SchoolsPlus Facilitator.
  2. Complete assigned duties efficiently and independently within a team framework.
  3. Establish and maintain supportive professional relationships with students and families.
  4. Collaborate with partner agencies as part of a comprehensive service plan, including attending meetings and consultations.
  5. Facilitate support groups for children and youth in schools and community settings within Inverness County.
  6. Perform duties during weekdays, evenings, weekends, March Break, and summer months.
  7. Maintain confidentiality as per SRCE policies.
  8. Adhere to all policies and guidelines.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Post-secondary degree or diploma in social sciences, such as Bachelor of Sociology, Social Work, Community Studies, Health, Psychology, or Child and Youth Studies.
  2. Strong written, oral communication, and public speaking skills.
  3. Valid Nova Scotia Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  4. Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of youth and families.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of the communities served.
  2. Two years of experience or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.
  3. Experience facilitating recreation groups, youth clubs, training sessions, etc.
  4. Training or experience working with at-risk youth is an asset.
