Purpose of the Position:

The Assistant Trainmaster will support the efficient movement of traffic within the road territory and yard-terminal by developing, coordinating, and ensuring the daily yard-terminal/road operating plan is completed in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Position Accountabilities:
  1. Coordinate all train movements within the yard and mainline through active supervision of personnel and communication across departments, ensuring compliance with the Local Service Operating Plan and Operating Plan.
  2. Coordinate and standardize processes related to the operating plan, including arrival, classification, building, inspecting, and dispatching of trains.
  3. Provide leadership accountability for safety, service, productivity, and financial metrics.
  4. Lead Trains and Engines operating employees as a safety leader by active observations, rule compliance discussions, and preventative staff engagement.
  5. Operate trains occasionally; maintain necessary certifications and licenses (e.g., Canadian Rail Operating Rules, Engineer) as per industry regulations.
  6. Assist in crew transportation to and from trains.
Position Requirements:
  • Previous railway experience as a conductor and Locomotive Engineer qualification is an asset.
  • 2 years’ supervisory experience in logistics or an operational environment preferred.
  • Availability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in all weather conditions.
  • Strong leadership presence with drive and commitment to career growth.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills to analyze root causes and resolve complex issues.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and situations.
  • Effective communication skills, including clear instructions over radio.
  • Ability to read and understand safety instructions, operating rules, and regulations in English.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
