POSITION OVERVIEW:

International Education Newfoundland and Labrador (IENL), in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, is leading an initiative for exceptional and motivated international students who are committed to living, working, and contributing to communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Study and Stay NL Program is a province-wide program aimed at connecting graduating international students directly to the entrepreneurial ecosystem and to the labour market, helping participants to build valuable professional and entrepreneurship skills, gain workplace knowledge, and build meaningful connections through workshops, networking, and mentorship.

The Retention Coordinator will be responsible for mapping existing on-campus supports, facilitating the mentorship program, and, where there are gaps, developing new initiatives to support and retain a cohort of current international students in this province post-graduation. The successful candidate will work closely with all of Newfoundland and Labrador’s post-secondary educational institutions, various provincial and federal government departments, and partners from around the world.

LOCATION(S):

St John’s, NL; Hybrid

EMPLOYMENT TERM:

Commencing immediately with a two-year appointment; final end date subject to funding availability.

SALARY:

$75,000 per annum

RESPONSIBLE TO:

IENL Directors

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinating the recruitment and selection of the 100+ final year student participants on an annual basis
• Conducting an assessment of students to identify his/her unique capabilities and any challenges he/she may face
• Developing mechanisms/programs to ensure each student is accessing appropriate resources at their respective campus
• Creating, delivering, and organizing workshops/events for international students
• Organizing additional, culturally relevant supports as needed and collaborating with institutions, professionals, and community agencies to facilitate mentorship program placements or improve employability engagement for the students
• Coordinate the mentorship program, strategically matching students by recruiting mentors for the program whose skills and industry expertise align with each student’s qualifications and career goals
• Identify and pursue opportunities for new partnerships by engaging with industry, government, and community stakeholders; support the development of strategic initiatives by drafting funding proposals and project plans that align with IENL’s mission and expand programming for international student retention
• Providing ongoing, individualized support/advice to students and monitoring their progress
• Other duties as required by the program and in tandem with the existing Retention Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Post-secondary degree
• Experience providing support to international students and promoting the province of Newfoundland and Labrador
• Experience in planning, scheduling, budgeting, and reporting in government funded projects
• Knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador’s education and training sector
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with meticulous attention to detail, planning, organizational, and time management skills
• Ability to anticipate issues and make independent decisions with confidence
• Background in delivering culturally responsive programming with experience coordinating or leading student support programs and familiarity with community resources
• Excellent interpersonal and social skills with a professional and effective demeanor in working with the public, IENL members, university staff and faculty, and international contacts
• Proven ability to develop strategic partnerships and write successful funding proposals, with a strong track record of initiating and supporting student retention programs
• Knowledge and experience working with a Board of Directors is an asset
