Job description

Beedie Luminaries is a social-profit enterprise designed to help remove barriers to education and provide wrap-around support for promising students who are facing financial adversity. Students who are smart, but constrained by circumstance. Students who are ready to rise above their circumstances and achieve their dreams.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Executive Director, Manager, Student Success , is responsible for promoting a positive, successful learning and program engagement experience for Beedie Luminaries’ SPARK, RISE and BUILD students to increase their retention and completion of studies, and their engagement in the Beedie Luminaries community. Supporting students with success strategies, goal setting, and providing continuous communication and check-ins to maximize goal attainment and foster personal empowerment to reach full potential.

The role is performed under limited supervision with an option of a 3 : 2 hybrid model, working a minimum of three days per week in-person office setting and two days remote. It may require travel within British Columbia and willingness to work evening and weekend hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a safe and supportive environment for students to explore academic, personal, and career issues;
  • Provide individual solution-focused support to address barriers to success;
  • Work one on one with students to enable self-assessment of their passions, strength, and development opportunities as it pertains to their studies and future goals;
  • Assist students with setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles and defining steps in education and career planning;
  • Build rapport and trust with students to support successful goal completion, monitor student progress toward goals, and offer guidance as needed;
  • Develop and promote a positive transition into a post-secondary environment as required;
  • Develop and conduct student onboarding and orientation sessions;
  • Provide ongoing communication and enforcement of program eligibility and guidelines;
  • Develop and present workshops focused on student success, promoting self-care, mindfulness, financial literacy, mental well-being, career development as required;
  • Monitor student progress and maintain communication log / case management files to track contact hours, issues, and outcomes of advising sessions and student portfolios with appropriate documentation, and develop term-end summary reports;
  • Oversees conditional and renewal appeal processes including evaluation, withdrawal, and termination.
  • Communicate Beedie Luminaries eligibility criteria, program guidelines and procedures to external stakeholders and the general public;
  • Develop relationships with academic and other stakeholders to stay abreast of community needs and post-secondary programs in order to provide students with up-to-date and accurate information;
  • Liaise with support agencies and academic partners to offer specialized services to students and refer students to outside agencies as appropriate.

Program Development

  • Assist with the student selection process and applications evaluation for program readiness;
  • Provide program feedback and updates to aid Beedie Luminaries in the development / enhancement of the program and wrap-around services to ensure successful outcomes for students;
  • Contribute relevant content to Beedie Luminaries’ Digital Community, social media channels and / or website blog; track and share success stories as needed;
  • Provide input on research and data collection for ongoing program review and policy changes as needed;
  • Work directly with the Executive Director to ensure timely responses to student and stakeholders’ issues, as well as modifying programs and processes to better service the program’s needs;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Attributes

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the BC Ministry of Education.
  • Five plus years experience in a post-secondary setting providing instruction and / or advice / counseling to young adult learners in a higher-education setting.
  • Training or experience in intersectional and anti-racist engagement, as well as understanding the issues of the upcoming generation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow post-secondary policies and procedures, student support resources, referrals, and services in BC.
  • Ability to network effectively, forging strong stakeholder relationships that facilitate pathways to education, training, and employment opportunities.
  • Personable style of communication, ability to relate to a diverse population, and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
  • Adaptive and responsive to changing needs and social conditions.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, database / CRM systems, and virtual and social media platforms.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to team environment.

100,000 - $110,000 a year

The annual base pay range for this position will be based on the desired experience level for this role. Additionally, Beedie recognizes exceptional individual and team performance through our pay-for-performance bonus program.
