Job Description
Job Summary
The Laundry Worker is primarily responsible for taking care of laundry tasks for The Salvation Army Jackson’s Point Conference Centre in compliance with health and safety requirements. They ensure the safe and efficient operation of the heavy laundry equipment in the cleaning of all types of linens etc. The incumbent is a professional with integrity and attention to detail who will provide the highest level of guest satisfaction in cleanliness and service.
Key Accountabilities
- Sort, classify and treat stains and process soiled laundry.
- Operate heavy commercial laundry equipment, loading and unloading laundry into and out of machines.
- Determine proper wash formula to apply in a particular laundry run, adds the formula to the washing.
- Dry linens following the manufacturer's recommendations.
- Fold by hand and sort out clean linens and laundry items, visually inspect for holes and other signs of wear, and deliver to housekeeping storage area.
- Be familiar with Fire Safety Plan and emergency procedures.
- Washes mops and cleaning cloths for housekeeping and kitchen departments.
- Maintain cleanliness in the laundry room area.
- Clean washers, dryers and laundry carts, sweep floors and dispose of garbage.
- Ensure proper start-up and shutdown of equipment.
- Follow WHMIS guidelines for use and storage of chemicals used for laundry and maintain records.
- Ensure that the maintenance log is accurate, up-to-date and completed in a timely manner.
- Check stocking levels of all laundry consumables and replace when appropriate.
- Lubricate equipment to provide light service to machines, and clean or change machine filters when needed.
- Responsible for ensuring that health, safety and hygiene standards are met as per facility requirements; hazard reports are prepared and submitted to the supervisor.
- Report to the supervisor new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Working Conditions
- This is a regular full-time position based on 35 hours weekly.
- High physical effort required to lift / move / carry / hand bomb up to 50 lbs. (22.68 kgs) repetitively and frequently during day-to-day operations without assistance from others.
- This job requires walking, carrying, sitting, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching frequently and working in a standing position for long periods of time.
- Manual or physical activities involve using gross motor skills; using machinery or equipment that requires very controlled movement as well as rapid physical movement and reflexes while maintaining physical balance.
- There is exposure to unusual / distracting noise from equipment; dust from dryer lint; hazardous cleaning chemicals; bodily fluids and waste, infectious diseases and odors when handling soiled laundry; wet or slippery floors; and awkward or confining workspaces when retrieving jammed linens or other articles from machinery.
Hours of Work
Hours and work schedule will vary as operational requirements and follow a work rotation schedule, including days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
Qualifications
- Completed Secondary School.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a professional laundry attendant role.
- Knowledge of health and safety standards, laundry detergents, and cleaning equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of washing products, fabric types, and proper laundry procedures.
- Understanding of infection control guidelines, MSDS, occupational health and safety, and equipment operation.
- Motivated, disciplined, flexible, and able to work independently or as part of a team, leading by example.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-friendly approach.
- Ability to follow instructions, operate equipment safely, and exercise good judgment.
- Effective multitasking, time management, organization, and work speed without compromising quality.
- Willingness to undergo background checks and support The Salvation Army's mission and standards.
Compensation
The target hiring range is $17.20 to $18.76, with a maximum of $22.51. Placement within this range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
