We are seeking an Advisor, Indigenous engagement, to take on a high-impact, meaningful challenge. Applications from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals are encouraged. The candidate may be based in Ottawa or Toronto.

The Role

The Advisor, Indigenous engagement, will foster respectful, positive relationships with Indigenous communities in Québec or Ontario, supporting community engagement initiatives. Responsibilities include providing leadership, project management, and strategic advice on Indigenous relations, impact assessments, consultations, socio-economic development, and capacity-building. This role ensures engagement activities align with Indigenous cultural protocols and regulatory requirements, contributing to positive change for Indigenous communities and the project's success.

The Responsibilities
  1. Relationship Building: Develop and maintain respectful, collaborative relationships with Indigenous communities, working with community leaders to identify shared goals and ensure transparent communication.
  2. Indigenous Community Engagement: Lead community engagement projects, including consultations and collaborations, ensuring alignment with community needs and project objectives.
  3. Strategy Implementation & Leadership: Support the development and execution of the Indigenous engagement strategy, fostering trust and openness.
  4. Partnership & Issue Management: Develop partnership strategies, manage issues, and provide strategic recommendations to senior management for long-term positive relationships.
  5. Socio-Economic Development & Capacity-Building: Identify opportunities for socio-economic initiatives benefiting Indigenous communities impacted by the project.
  6. Reporting & Strategic Advice: Provide updates, draft reports, and present findings to support decision-making and strategy development.
  7. Logistics & Engagement Activities: Manage logistics for engagement activities, ensuring thorough documentation for impact analysis.
  8. Collaboration with Partners & Consultants: Work with private partners and consultants to ensure compliance, manage risks, and meet project obligations.
  9. Cultural Protocol & Risk Management: Guide teams on Indigenous cultural protocols and regulatory compliance, ensuring respectful engagement.
The Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, Public Relations, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Indigenous relations, community engagement, impact assessments, or socio-economic development.
  • Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative, with leadership and problem-solving abilities.
  • Respectful understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
  • Results-oriented, aiming for mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Experience building relationships with Indigenous communities, government, and private partners.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural protocols, legal requirements, and engagement best practices.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Proficiency in English or French; bilingual is an asset.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.
