The Town of Lunenburg is currently undertaking a review of Recreation Services to ensure we are meeting the needs of the community and continuing to improve the quality of life of our residents.

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Director of Recreation and Parklands to lead the transition to a new department that better meets the demand for recreation programs and facilities. This senior position is a key role for a motivated individual excited about fostering community engagement and delivering high-quality recreational spaces and active lifestyle opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Located on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, the town of Lunenburg is a diverse and vibrant community of 2300+ year-round residents with numerous seasonal residents. Lunenburg is a coastal town offering a multitude of cultural and recreational opportunities which supports a quality of lifestyle and is within a short driving distance of Halifax and Stanfield International Airport.

Lunenburg maintains a diverse balance of initiatives that focus on community, environment, development and providing quality municipal services to the community. The Recreation & Parklands Director, as a senior management position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and is responsible for overseeing the Town’s recreational offerings and facilities, trails and playgrounds including coordinating rentals and programs. All Recreation Department employees and contracted program providers report directly to the Director of Recreation. This position plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of Life in Lunenburg by promoting active lifestyles and strengthening community connections.

  • Team Leadership : Supervise and schedule recreation staff and contracted program providers, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Program Development : Plan and execute a diverse range of recreational programs to meet the needs and interest of the community.
  • Facility Management : Oversee the booking, rental, maintenance, and safety of recreation facilities, including the Town’s playground parks, trails, arena, sports fields, and recreation center, ensuring a clean, safe, and well – maintained environment.
  • Budget Oversight : Collaborate with CAO and Finance Director on developing annual recreation budget, monitor expenditure, oversee staff in seeking funding opportunities through research and applying for grants and partnerships with third party agencies and government programs.
  • Collaboration : Collaborate with local program delivery groups including not-for-profit. Department of Community, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism (Sport & Recreation), Recreation Facilities Association of Nova Scotia, other municipal recreation departments, and others to offer a broad range of recreational and sports programs utilizing the Town’s facilities.
  • Community Engagement : Build relationships with residents, local organizations, and stakeholders to promote participation in recreational sports programs and events.
  • Marketing and Promotion : Support Communications & Events in promoting spaces, programs and events through social media, promotional materials, and local media.
  • Compliance & Safety : Ensure adherence to all regulations and safety standards, including risk management protocols and facility policies.
  • Customer Service : Deliver exceptional service by addressing inquiries, concerns, and feedback promptly and professionally, including support and clear communication with renters.

Requirements :

This is a full-time, five (5) days a week, on-site senior management position based at the Community Centre and Arena, thirty-five hours (35) per week. This role involves a commitment to supporting programs and events which means some evening and weekend / Statutory Holiday work will be required.

Flexibility is essential to meet the needs of the community and ensure the success of recreational services.

What You Possess :

The ideal candidate will have :

  • Degree level education in Recreation Management, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years proven experience in Recreation Program Management, Event Coordination, scheduling, and staff supervision.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with budgeting, grant writing, and marketing strategies.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in recreation services.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License with clean abstract.
  • Class C Frist Aid -CPR will be required.
  • RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check will be required.
