Job description

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

HOURS OF WORK: Various

WORK TERM: Casual on-call basis - 10 Month (September to June)

LOCATION: Various schools/bus runs throughout the Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education.

RATE OF PAY: $26.26 per hour


MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Class 1, 2 or 3 NS Driver’s Licence and 6 months’ experience driving large commercial vehicles (ie. large bus, semi-trailer/tractor trailer combinations, etc.) is preferred.
  • Driver's with a Class 5 NS Driver's Licence, together with a clear Driver's Abstract and significant experience working with children and youth may be considered.
  • WHIMIS
  • Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in experience and training.
  • Demonstrated ability to do work as required in the posted positions, and the ability to work with others and provide assistance.
  • Reliable and conscientious.
  • Acceptable record of attendance in previous employment.
  • Acceptable Abstract of Drivers License.
  • Demonstrated high standard of safety, and ability to effectively relate to students.
  • Ability to do proper daily bus inspections and complete forms required.
  • Valid Standard First Aid.
  • Acceptable Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks.
  • Air brake endorsement is an asset.

Please Note:

Successful casual bus driver applicants who do not have Class 2B with Air Brakes Certification, must be willing to obtain one through CBVRCE's training program. Through a signed Return of Service Agreement between the CBVRCE and the applicant, the applicant will receive remuneration upon successful completion of the training program calculated at the minimum wage rate, for up to a maximum of 15 days and a maximum of 8 hours per day, depending on the level of upgrading required. This remuneration is subject to all legally required deductions. In return, the applicant is required to work a minimum of one thousand (1000) hours as a Bus Driver within two (2) years of the applicants’ successful completion of the training program.

JOB DESCRIPTION: BUS DRIVER

RESPONSIBLE TO: Co-ordinator of Transportation

ROLE: To drive a school bus on an assigned route

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate a school bus in accordance with all safety standards as prescribed by the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and in accordance with School Board Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections at the beginning of each work day.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections prior to extra/co-curricular trips.
  • Complete all transportation related forms as required (Hours of Work, Route & Passenger Sheets, Daily Inspection Sheets, etc.).
  • Maintain discipline on school buses and follow Board Policies and procedures of incidents on buses.
  • Report all accidents in accordance with Board policy and procedures.
  • Keep inside and outside of bus clean in accordance with Board standards.
  • Report mechanical problems to appropriate designate.
  • Operate the school bus in accordance with route plan and schedule.
  • Attend all driver inservices provided by the board.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
