The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.

The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created to ensure its financial viability by overseeing its services and financial affairs. It is bound by its By-laws, Mission, and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution.

In addition to providing wage-based employment for students, the AMS aims to support its broader objectives through high-quality, relevant student-funded services, offering employment opportunities and meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom.

Job Summary

The AMS Judicial Committee is the ultimate adjudicating body responsible for hearing cases related to : Level I Non-Academic Misconduct, Policy Infringement, Disputes on the ruling of the Speaker of Assembly, and Elections. The Judicial Committee Chair oversees all meetings, ensuring adherence to established procedures. The Chair is a non-voting member during hearings and must release a summary of decisions within 72 hours.

While the Chair reports administratively to the Secretariat and Judicial Affairs Office, the Judicial Committee remains independent. The Chair also acts as an advisor to the Judicial Affairs Office to uphold the judicial pillars.

Applicants must be in their second year; preference given to those with judicial branch experience.

Job Duties

  • Uphold confidentiality and integrity of the misconduct system
  • Participate in AMS hiring efforts
  • Work with the Vice-Chair to summarize rationale and release decisions promptly
  • Chair hearings, ensuring policy adherence
  • Mediate between the Judicial Affairs Office and AMS
  • Uphold judicial pillars : peer-led, non-adversarial, complaint-driven, restorative justice, procedural fairness
  • Attend training sessions and monitor staff performance
  • Address customer complaints professionally
  • Assist with staff training and performance reinforcement
  • Oversee staff performance and adherence to standards and safety regulations
  • Communicate timely with supervisors and participate in meetings
  • Complete tasks efficiently, fostering a respectful environment
  • Represent the AMS positively, adhering to policies and standards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Work Conditions
