Job description

Job Description: Mental Health & Substance Use Nurse

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Under the general direction of the team leader or designate, the nurse serves in a multidisciplinary Intensive Case Management Team, primarily providing services in community settings, with some facility-based services as needed. The role involves delivering core mental health and addictions services, including assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and support, in partnership with clients, families, and community healthcare resources. Based on an identified rehabilitation plan, the nurse develops, plans, implements, and maintains comprehensive clinical services and client-centered rehabilitation programs.

Qualifications: Education, Training, And Experience
  • Graduation from a recognized nursing program.
  • A minimum of two years of adult or child/youth MHSU nursing experience.
  • At least six months supporting clients with substance use issues in a community setting or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN.
  • Current CPR certification.
Knowledge
  • Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) model; assessment, treatment, and case management methodologies, including motivational interviewing.
  • Relevant legislation and community MHSU programs, services, resources, and promotion.
  • Role of other health disciplines, including primary care physicians, in client care.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using the nursing process for mental health treatment, including assessment, planning, implementation, decision-making, organization, prioritization, evaluation, and communication.
  • Ability to administer and monitor psychotropic medications' side effects.
  • Capability to work independently in community settings.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, crisis intervention, leadership, teaching, counseling, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage aggressive behavior and use non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving program needs.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties and operate related equipment.
  • Must have reliable transportation to meet travel requirements of the position.
