Youth employment pathways at Holland Bloorview support teens and young adults with disabilities to participate in employment experiences and build skills, confidence and connections. The Youth at Work program is for high school students who are starting to build experiences through volunteering at our hospital. Hourly rate will be $21.69.

Key Responsibilities
The Youth Worker works with youth with an intellectual disability, autism and/or physical disability to enable them to be successful in summer work experiences. The specific responsibilities include:

  • Participate with individual in job task training and organizational orientation. Adapt learning strategies suited to the individual and tasks to promote job performance. Examples: detailed daily schedule, task breakdown and checklists of steps.
  • Coach individual to develop and use life skills needed for job success, for example: communication skills, following a schedule, etc.
  • Support individual in virtual social interactions with peers, co-workers and/or supervisors, if needed.
  • In addition, the Youth Worker may:

    • Support group programming (workshops, social group) by facilitating social interactions
    • Perform other assigned duties or projects (e.g., preparing graduation certificates).

    The Youth Worker will communicate and meet regularly with the program’s Occupational Therapist(s). Meetings focus on discussion of specific client’s participation and goals and adjustments to supportive strategies as needed in order to promote client’s engagement, confidence, competence, inclusion, safety and wellbeing.

    Qualifications

    • You are a current student enrolled in post-secondary education.
    • Your interests and experiences include:
      • Interest in a career in health / social services fields
      • Experience working with youth with disabilities
      • Experience in a coaching or mentoring role
      • Paid work experience working in two or more roles/industries (e.g., hospitality, recreation, administration, etc.)
    • You are:

      • A strong communicator
      • Able to identify opportunities for learning and develop action plans
      • Self-directed but also a good team member
      • Organized
      • Experienced using Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and Microsoft office products (Word, Powerpoint, Excel)
    • Lived experience of disability is an asset.

      • First Aid/CPR training
      • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate

    Weeks of work and required availability:

    • Must be available to work 30 hours/week starting June 16 until August 22 with possibility of some training days prior to June 16.
    • Work is primarily onsite at Holland Bloorview but occasional flexibility to work at various workplace locations in the Toronto community and/or virtually is required.

    Additional Qualifications

    This position is funded through a government program, which creates summer job opportunities for students; therefore, eligible candidates must be:

    • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
    • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment. International students are not eligible participants. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
    • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
    • Youth hired for a CSJ-funded job should not be already employed full-time by the organization. However, a youth working part-time for an employer, or who has previously worked for an employer as part of a Co-op placement is eligible for a CSJ-funded job.
