Teck's two regional business units, North America and Latin America, oversee Teck's assets through all phases of safe, sustainable development, operation and closure. The business units are supported by enterprise-wide functions that set strategic direction, establish standards and provide governance, as well as supporting the business through shared services, centres of excellence and business partnering.

Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Relations and Human Rights, the Manager, Human Rights is responsible for managing the development, governance and implementation of Teck's Human Rights Policy, programs, standards and procedures. This capability is critical to Teck's strategy and must be performed to a high standard to drive competitive advantage. This outstanding individual will work closely with regions and sites in partnership with internal groups including commercial, projects, exploration, legacy, and human resources. This position is based in Vancouver or Santiago with occasional site travel required.

  • This position provides direct oversight of enterprise, regional, and site human rights risks and programs. In doing so, this critical role enables Teck to respect and observe all human rights, particularly those of our employees, contractors, workers in our value chain, and members of communities where we work. This includes:
  • Development and enforcement of Teck's human rights strategy
  • Ongoing human rights due diligence in our operations and value chain, including independent verification
  • Management of human rights risks in collaboration with internal and external groups
  • Development of strategic relationships with educational institutions, government bodies, NGOs, corporations and UN agencies to advance the goals of the strategy
  • Ongoing development and communication of these programs both internally and externally to build Teck's reputation and brand recognition
  • Execution of all sustainability, regulatory and financial reporting requirements

As part of the Social Performance and Indigenous Relations team within the Sustainability group, this position takes on senior-level duties including support of Projects, Government Relations, Strategy and Development to progress the business priorities of Teck. This position will direct external consultants, as well as indirect governance for employees across Teck responsible for human rights. The position will require technical knowledge of internal processes, business requirements and technologies while assessing strategic fit with company brand, culture and initiatives. You will build relationships with internal departments to form critical interdependencies, both corporately and with sites, regions and functions, as well as implement senior executives' strategy. The ability to lead through influence is critical for this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead the management, project development, implementation and reporting with respect to human rights policy, programs and due diligence. This includes independent verification aligned with Teck's overall business strategy and priorities
  • Provide oversight and mentorship to all employees whose work intersects with human rights. Ensure adherence to regulations, corporate policies, standards, implementation of local human rights programs and reporting requirements, alongside providing strategic advice on risks and opportunities
  • Manage financial, regulatory and sustainability reporting requirements. This is not limited to annual Modern Slavery reporting, sustainability reporting, external sustainability matrices and internal reporting requirements
  • Build strategic partnerships, including those global, with major partners such as educational institutions, United Nations agencies, corporations and NGOs to improve company reputation and position the company as a sectoral leader in human rights to build trust in mining
  • Provide strategic support to the CEO, Chief Sustainability Officer and ELT with regard to human rights risk management, government engagement, and securing high-level event invitations and speech opportunities. Ensure that these initiatives profile Teck's dedication to human rights and improve company relationships and reputation
  • Build external and internal communications relating to human rights programs. Incorporate external submissions, presentations, speaking notes, briefing notes and web content for use by employees including CEO, ELT, and Teck's program partners
  • Represent Teck on various NGO/private sector working groups and committees related to global human rights initiatives as well as conferences and speaking opportunities towards improving and advancing Teck's brand
  • Provide region-wide subject matter expertise support on human rights to support site-level risk management, communications and internal engagement
  • Collaborate with a diversity of enterprise-level groups, including Corporate Affairs, Government Affairs, Environment, Legal, Marketing, Procurement and Human Resources
  • Support the planning of critical initiatives, decision-making processes and program development

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 10+ years of relevant professional work experience specifically in human rights, social management and responsibility, sustainability or community engagement and development. A post- graduate degree is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human rights best practices, standards, and guidance, with an ability to implement these on Teck's behalf
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize quickly
  • Cultivate positive relationships, both internally and externally, and develop strategic partnerships to advance corporate objectives
  • Comfortable engaging with senior leaders and representing Teck to government officials and global or governmental organizations, including the United Nations and World Economic Forum
  • Budgeting, resource management and planning experience
  • Excellent writing, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong demonstrable computer skills, particularly with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Oriented by results with excellent organizational, planning and efficient decision-making skills
  • Familiarity working with the extractives sector
  • Track record influencing colleagues and practice
  • Ability to travel to sites is required

Salary Range: $135,000 - $167,000

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
