The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

The Real Estate Division (RED) at the UBC Sauder School of Business is a world recognized leader in the development and provision of regulatory, certification and credit educational programs for the real estate professions. The organization’s business model is centred on the design and development of custom curricula, and the sale and marketing of the resultant copyrighted intellectual property. Current and prospective clients include all levels of governmental and regulatory agencies, and provincial, national and international professional bodies.


The Executive Director is responsible for the overall strategic vision, direction and leadership and oversees all operations and business activities of a complex series of credit and non-credit programs that fall under the Real Estate Division Degree, Diploma, Certificate and Professional Programs (RED-DCP) to ensure they align with both the school’s and industry’s short- and long-term objectives.

The Executive Director is responsible for a multi-million-dollar budget generation through the creation of business partnerships and formal agreements, and serves thousands of students, numerous clients, partners and stakeholder organizations across the province and Canada.

Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Dean, UBC Sauder School of Business. This position has primary accountability for the reputation and profitability of the RED-DCP programs and as such is responsible for developing strong working relationships with:
- government officials and representatives, business leaders, professional association executives and professional designation bodies;
- key stakeholders, including cross-Canada post-secondary universities and college officials, as well as industry and employer partners;
- the Dean and/or UBC Sauder senior management, consultants, and external communities.
- UBC faculty, national professional and industry consultants and staff involved in RED-DCP activities.

Work Performed

  • Develops and leads the implementation of short- and long-term strategies and objectives for RED-DCP, aligning with both the school’s and industry’s objectives.

  • Communicates the priorities that drive the planning, implementation and evaluation of RED programs and services.

  • Provides overall strategic vision and direction for a complex business and educational enterprise and proactively leads the identification and evaluation of local, national and international opportunities for the business expansion.

  • Develops and executes on strategic action plans to enhance reputation and maximize the profitability of the RED-DCP programs.

  • Establishes strategic goals for the business operation and each divisional area. Develops strategic business plans in support of those goals.

  • Develops annual budget and financial controls to meet revenue targets for the profit-driven enterprise, managing revenues and expenses for a variety of educational products and services.

  • Provides organizational oversight and leadership to the unit and oversees all operations and business activities.

  • Provides leadership and advice and acts as the liaison with national and international governmental regulatory organizations, professional associations, industry employer groups and post-secondary institutions.

  • Identifies and develops business relationships and partnerships with key professional associations, industry employer groups and post-secondary institutions.

  • Responsible for determining and providing strategic direction on systems, programs and services to support RED clients.

  • Identifies public relations opportunities, developing and implementing communication strategies in support of the organization’s goals.

  • Performs other duties aligned with the classification level.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
This is a key position in the school, playing a pivotal role in setting the overall direction of the enterprise, as well as having a financial responsibility role that includes management of revenues and expenses in the multi-million-dollar range. As a result, the impact of decisions in this area has both immediate and long-term impacts on the operating results of the organization and on the school’s financial position. Stakeholder-related decisions help shape the identity of the UBC Sauder School of Business and as a result have very significant and long-lasting effect on the school’s image and competitive position. Decisions made about curriculum, program structure and delivery have a direct impact on students’ ability to learn, on their ability to meet licensing and professional designation requirements, and ultimately on their ability to become active members of the real estate industry and alumni of the UBC Sauder School of Business.

Supervision Received
Exercises significant independent judgment in the creation and implementation of strategies and initiatives. Reports directly to the Dean.

Supervision Given
Directs the work of all RED-DCP constituent units through a group of professional management and support staff, including external consultants, and through subordinate managers.

Minimum Qualifications
A Master's degree in a related discipline, or the equivalent in education and experience. Minimum ten years of related experience, and a demonstrated ability to establish a vision and plan strategically in a complex competitive environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework of numerous sectors of the real estate industry in Canada and abroad, and a well-developed understanding of the competitive and political nature of professional real estate education.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a particular focus on being able to negotiate and maintain strong relationship-based client partnerships.

  • Dynamic entrepreneurial skills with strong business and financial acumen, excellent judgment, the ability to operate independently, as well as to act creatively to generate new revenues for the enterprise.

  • Must be able to travel within and outside of Canada.
