APSEA is seeking an Educational Deaf Interpreter to provide ASL support and facilitate cultural learning for Deaf students in Moncton, NB. Qualifications

Location: New Brunswick, Canada (this position requires in-person services, not virtual)

Role Overview:

The Educational Deaf Interpreter (EDI) provides American Sign Language (ASL) linguistic modeling and support to Deaf signing students, facilitating Deaf culture learning in educational settings.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Provide ASL instruction in classroom and social settings
  • Support students in understanding cultural differences between home and school
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, Supervisors, and ASL specialists
  • Assist students in transitioning from an Educational Deaf Interpreter to an Educational Interpreter

Qualifications:

  • Lived experience as a Deaf, deaf, or hard of hearing individual
  • Native fluency in ASL
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Ability to obtain an ASLPI Rating from Sign Language Institute of Canada (SLIC)
  • Functional literacy in English
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Comfortable working in virtual learning environments
  • Adherence to standards set by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Early Childhood Education training
  • Deaf Adult Literacy Training
  • ASL/English Literacy experience
  • ASL Instructor or Interpreter experience
  • Linguistic or translation work
  • Community support or advocacy experience
  • Residence or summer camp counseling experience
