Qualifications

  • Minimum four years of maintenance and repair experience in a marine environment.
  • Valid Fourth Class Motor Certificate and Marine Basic First Aid required.

Job description

City Experiences is seeking a Chief Engineer for our City Cruises operation in Toronto.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences’ RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

  • The Chief Engineer executes repairs and regular maintenance of our fleet of Transport Canada inspected passenger vessels and associated equipment. As part of the engineering team, the Chief Engineer is responsible for troubleshooting problems as well as designing and implementing solutions. The Chief Engineer completes daily job assignments and duties and reports on the status of work assignments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safe and reliable operation of all vessels, systems, machinery, and equipment with due regard for the Safety Management System (SMS) and good seamanship.
  • Routinely inspect all areas of the vessels and dock for unsafe conditions, and assist in accident investigations and reports.
  • Stand engine room watch, monitoring and noting performance of engines, machinery, and all auxiliary equipment.
  • Work closely with the Captain to ensure the physical aspect of the vessel is under control.
  • Participate in emergency drills in accordance with Transport Canada regulations.
  • Participate in safety meetings to ensure efficient and safe operation at all times.
  • Maintain engineering operations and maintenance logs; paying attention to recording of incidents and irregularities.
  • Administer the Planned Maintenance System and the R&M budget including purchasing.
  • Conduct maintenance and repair of hull, structure and all mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Ensure a clean workplace throughout the day.
  • Report non-conformities to the Designated Person (Associate Director, Marine Operations).
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the business at all times.
  • Maintain technical operation records and files, keeping a sufficient stock of bunkers and lubricants.
  • Conduct short safety meetings with direct reports prior to operations.
  • Plan, schedule and delegate tasks to the maintenance team.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to all direct subordinates during operations.
  • Support Food & Beverage and other departments with projects, maintenance, and operations as required.
  • Coordinate engineering activities in the absence of the Director of Marine Operations.
  • Provide technical leadership and operational expertise to the engineering team.
  • Notify the Master of the vessel if any critical system is not functioning.
  • Ensure all Safety Equipment is present and inspected to the relevant standards.
  • Understand both Operational and Emergency procedures.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and follow safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance.
  • Report to work on time for all scheduled shifts.
  • Understand all City Cruises Toronto policies and procedures.
  • Maintain good relations among all superiors, colleagues, and subordinates.
  • Complete any other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Valid Fourth Class (or higher) Motor Certificate of Competency
  • Current Marine Basic First Aid
  • MED with respect to STCW basic safety
  • MED training with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats
  • MED in advanced firefighting
  • Current Transport Canada approved medical (within previous two years)
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
  • Minimum four years of relevant maintenance and repair experience
  • Minimum four years of experience in the marine environment
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • WHMIS for workers in Ontario an asset
  • Fall Arrest Training an asset
  • Confined Space Training an asset
  • Ability to complete a criminal background check
  • Specialized skills such as fitting, welding, equipment operating are a plus
  • Ability to lift up to 55 pounds
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods
  • Wear assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
