Job Description

Position Purpose summary:

Under the direction of the Community Services Supervisor the employee provides resident support services, on-site supervision and security for the NWT Resource Centre.

Accountabilities

Assists with completion of initial/ongoing assessment for each client:

  • Providing supervisor with client admission information
  • Observing, reporting, and recording client behaviour
  • Informing supervisor of any significant changes in client’s condition
  • Orienting the client to the facility
  • Completing concise, reliable documentation of clients presenting condition and other pertinent factors
  • Completes daily standard documentation: assessment forms, client records (progress notes), communication book, and other relevant client reports.
  • Enters HIFIS
  • Client Referrals – Hospital; RCMP

Provides Basic Supportive Care To Clients

  • provides needed personal hygiene items.
  • supports and reinforces case management decisions and direction.
  • conducts general building security checks.
  • provides appropriate crisis intervention.
  • communicates a non-judgemental attitude towards clients.
  • supports, coaches, and encourages clients
  • provides food services
  • participates in shift reporting,
  • attends and participates in staff meetings
  • provides concise and pertinent information about client status.
  • helps in daily planning and implementation of client support care.

  • Performs housekeeping duties
  • Aids other areas within the NWT Resource Centre as required

Critical Relationship Management

Internal/ External relationships:

  • Directly reports to the Community services and Shelter supervisor
  • There is constant contact with clients to provide for their needs and assess their situations.
  • There is daily contact with employees from other departments to pass on relevant information and radio checks.
  • There is regular contact with the Community Services Supervisor and Shelter Caseworker
  • There is also occasional contact with contracting agencies.
  • Emergency Services may occasionally need to be called.

Working Conditions

This is a fixed-term, part-time position at 9 hours per week, Saturday and Sunday, 6:30 to 11:00 pm until April 30, 2026.

The work environment can be fast paced and demanding. The need to be constantly aware of the environment and the movements and attitudes of the individual clients can be stressful. There is a potential to work with aggressive, high-risk clients in this position

There will be general housekeeping tasks required of the RCSW (sweeping, mopping, dishwashing, laundry, etc.)

Conflict Resolution

First Aid

Verbal Judo and/or NVCI

Suicide Intervention

WHMIS

High School Graduate

Post-Secondary Education or related experience in Social Services

Clear Criminal Record Check

Note: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Effective interpersonal communication and interactive skills with individuals experiencing chronic mental health issues, effects of intoxication and other behavioural issues.
  • The ability to respond appropriately, decisively, and effectively in crisis situations and in a stressful environment
  • Effective communication in English both written and oral
  • Effective assessment, observation and recording skills
  • Implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to work within a teamwork structure though will be required to work alone
  • Effective interviewing skills
  • Understanding of: Aboriginal and Inuit Cultures: Addictions: Mental Health and other social issues
  • Computer skills are required

The Successful Incumbent Will Be Required To Complete/provide

  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • WHMIS
  • The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention
  • Clear internal abuse registry check
  • Participate in mandatory yearly training.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $24.70 to $25.66 with a maximum of $26.61.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
