Job Summary: The Fitness Instructor is responsible for providing client-centred, evidence-based, efficient care to individuals in their homes and community. The Fitness Instructor delivers exercises to clients under the direction of the Program Supervisor and/or designate associated with the program and in line with the certification standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sets up physical class environment (chairs, equipment, etc.).
  • Develops, modifies and delivers low-impact, safe and effective group or in-home exercises that prevent injury, reduce risk of falls and provide therapeutic benefits for older adults, with attention to medical issues and risks for high-risk or frail older adults.
  • Utilizes tools and resources such as resistance bands, exercise balls, weights, music, etc.
  • Communicates effectively to gather information from clients, including completing paperwork with new participants.
  • Promotes client independence through fitness and health promotion.
  • Works toward achieving client goals.
  • Participates in ongoing review and evaluation of service delivery.
  • Attends educational in-services as deemed appropriate by the Program Supervisor.
  • Provides fall prevention education as directed.
  • Reports incidents promptly per legislation and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Common Responsibilities:

  • Promotes the goals and values of VON as an integrated community care provider.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy workplace in accordance with OHS Act, Regulations, and VON policies.
  • Follows all VON policies, confidentiality, and privacy regulations.
  • Collaborates with team members to deliver services.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Engages with Clients, Program Coordinators, Supervisors, Kinesiologists, other Fitness Instructors, and Program Assistants to meet client and program needs.
  • Communicates with community partners regarding client care and program delivery.

Education, Designations and Experience:

  • High school diploma required.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications required.
  • Certification as a Seniors Fitness Instructor or equivalent required within 3 months of hire.
  • Experience promoting health through physical activity.
  • Post-secondary education in healthcare or related fields is an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience teaching group fitness for older adults, including chronic conditions, is an asset.
  • Experience in retirement or assisted living environments is an asset.

Other Requirements:

  • Access to a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.

  • Ability to wear PPE as required.

Working conditions involve physical activity such as lifting, bending, reaching, and walking, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements. Must adhere to safety and health standards.
