Compensation

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.

· Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $22.07 per hour.(Rates effective September 1, 2024)

· Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $34.73 per hour.(Rates effective September 1, 2024)

· In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

Duties

1. The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required).

2. Marker-Grader responsibilities will be required. The marker-grader is expected to mark assignments, term projects, case reports, midterms, progress exams, and/or final exams and must be prepared to provide written feedback to students that will clearly identify the basis of the grade assigned; whether it is due to substantive content, or to written communications, including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and overall structure and organization of the submission.

3. Must be available to meet with Instructor as necessary, between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM.

Qualifications

1. Minimum 3rd Year complete in the CHYS BA or CHYS BA/BEd program, or be entering and/or continuing in the CHYS MA or CHYS PhD program.

2. Must have previously completed CHYS 2P10 or equivalent*, and obtained 80% or higher. Previous successful experience as a Teaching Assistant for CHYS 2P10 will be considered as equivalent.

3. Must have effective communication skills including the ability to explain subject material to students. Provide, if available, an evaluation of successful previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or Marker-Grader.

4. Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

* It is the applicant’s responsibility to identify the course for consideration of equivalency. For courses taken at Brock, identify the course (i.e., XXXX 3P00). For courses taken elsewhere provide a copy of your transcript, highlight the course and provide the course description. Failure to provide the required documentation to support the request for consideration of equivalency will result in an incomplete application.

As per Article 22.04 of the Collective Agreement:

  • Members shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e., not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.
  • It is the responsibility of the member to accept only as many appointments (i.e. hours of work) as will allow their to successfully complete the duties assigned for each appointment. It is understood that members who accept multiple appointments will be held to the same standards and expectations as other members of the Bargaining Unit and other members working in the same course and/or department.

Permission to exceed the above-mentioned workload limits should be obtained prior to application.
