Job description

Curator Job Description:

The Curator is responsible for planning and implementing exhibitions at the Lake Country Art Gallery. They will collaborate closely with the Executive Director on all planning aspects.

Specific Curatorial Duties:

  1. Develop exhibition plans, including creative concepts, researching opportunities, and responding to unique exhibition possibilities.
  2. Manage 'Calls for Artists'.
  3. Handle communication with artists and related correspondence, including policies, invitations, and thank you letters.
  4. Coordinate exhibition timelines, including application deadlines, delivery, and opening receptions, in consultation with the Executive Director.
  5. Provide an annual summary of upcoming exhibitions to the Executive Director by August.
  6. Present a detailed exhibition plan for the upcoming year at the January Board Meeting.
  7. Draft promotional materials and press releases for each exhibition for timely marketing.
  8. Organize artist talks, critique sessions, or other public events.
  9. Oversee the Gallery Preparation Committee for wall preparations and technical installations.
  10. Lead the Installation Committee, setting expectations for artwork handling and installation/dismantling procedures.
  11. Manage interpretative materials such as labels, brochures, and artist statements.
  12. Produce catalogues or brochures for exhibitions as appropriate.
  13. Coordinate opening reception details with the Friends of the Gallery Committee.

Position Hours:

Average 80 hours per month, totaling approximately 960 hours annually. Hours are to be coordinated as needed, with potential for additional hours depending on funding and special projects.

Qualifications and Skills:

Required:

  • Degree in Fine Arts, Curatorial, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Additional Assets:

  • Experience with website tools like Weebly or WordPress.
  • Visual arts curatorial experience.
  • Experience with community or public arts and non-profit organizations.

Timelines:

Application deadline: June 15. Position starts on September 1, 2025, or a negotiated date.

Salary:

Part-time position with an annual salary of $26,400. Additional hours for special projects paid at an approved hourly rate, with prior approval from the Executive Director.
