This job posting is for an existing vacancy and is intended to fill a current position within our organization.

We are currently looking for a Norquay Leadership Trainer to join our team of committed professionals. This full-time summer contract position within the Association is housed at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario’s John Island Camp location in Spanish, Ontario.

Under the supervision of the Leadership & Out-Tripping Manager, the Norquay Leadership Trainer is responsible for the planning, implementation, facilitation, debriefing and evaluation of the second year Leadership Development Program.

LOCATION : Spanish, ON

Major Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and implement the Norquay River program
  • Support and lead Norquay River participants and focus on their technical skills such as whitewater wilderness expedition, risk management, and other program areas of camp
  • Promote leadership skills for campers while providing experiences in wilderness travel, whitewater canoeing and camper care skills
  • Follow and implement the Norquay curriculum as it is found in the Norquay trainer manual
  • Build relationships with and be a positive role model for all camper and other staff members
  • Assist in other areas of camp as well as programming and provide support during Family Camp

Qualifications

  • Possession of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) considered an asset
  • Working towards a College diploma in outdoor recreation or related field
  • Experience working with campers aged 14-16 with 50 days logged as a camping trip leader
  • Experience leading wilderness trips in a variety of skill sets (canoe, sea kayak, hike)
  • Technical skills in wilderness camping and travel
  • Knowledgeable in Outtrips practices and its risk management considerations
  • Skills in teaching wilderness camping and tripping skills
  • Experience in teaching leadership concepts
  • Knowledge of leadership theories and teachings
  • Knowledge of wilderness leadership practices
  • Knowledgeable in wilderness trip practices and its risk management considerations on remote rivers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C
  • Current and satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
