About Hatch's Mining and Metals Sector

Hatch provides comprehensive engineering services for the mining and metals industry. Our approach to mine waste and closure management considers all aspects—from dewatering to final containment—aiming to reduce risks and find innovative solutions. We assemble strong, multidisciplinary teams to manage, reduce, and repurpose tailings and mine waste effectively.

Position Overview: Senior Geotechnical Tailings Engineer

Based in Mississauga, Canada, this role is ideal for a motivated professional with a strong technical background interested in developing our Tailings Practice. You will support and expand our capabilities within North America, reporting to the Tailings Practice Lead in Canada and the Global Practice Director.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design tailings storage facilities, guiding geotechnical analyses and coordinating multidisciplinary teams across project phases—from conceptual to construction.
  2. Prepare and review feasibility studies, engineering reports, drawings, and specifications for mine waste disposal.
  3. Identify and resolve geotechnical issues, including settlements, liquefaction potential, slope stability, and pore pressure concerns.
  4. Perform slope stability and seepage analyses, utilizing geotechnical software such as SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, and SIGMA/W.
  5. Develop and oversee field and lab investigations, including instrumentation monitoring programs.
  6. Support field operations through supervision and troubleshooting, with experience in drilling, in situ testing, and construction assessment.
  7. Prepare proposals and cost estimates using Hatch's internal systems.
  8. Mentor junior engineers and support team development.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's in Civil, Geological, or Mining Engineering; postgraduate in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • Professional Engineering registration in Ontario.
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience, including field and construction quality assurance.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; bilingual in English/French preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, GeoStudio or Rocscience software, AutoCAD Civil3D; programming skills in Python or Visual Basic are a plus.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally; valid passport and driver's license required.
